The literature on mixed-species flocks references a wide variety of bird associations. These studies, however, have used an array of unstructured characteristics to describe flocks, ranging from the temporal occurrence of flocking to the identity and behavioural features of constituent members, with little consensus on which key traits define and c...
Species interactions can propagate disturbances across space via direct and indirect effects, potentially connecting species at a global scale. However, ecological and biogeographic boundaries may mitigate this spread by demarcating the limits of ecological networks. We tested whether large-scale ecological boundaries (ecoregions and biomes) and hu...
Species interactions can propagate disturbances across space, though ecological and biogeographic boundaries may limit this spread. We tested whether large-scale ecological boundaries (ecoregions and biomes) and human disturbance gradients increase dissimilarity among ecological networks, while accounting for background spatial and elevational effe...
Information on the diet of some species of tropical parrots is still scarce. We present data on the feeding ecology of the red-eared parakeet Pyrrhura hoematotis, an endemic and poorly known species of Venezuelan montane forests. Additionally, we describe other observations on the diet of the Venezuelan parakeet Pyrrhura emma, scarlet-fronted parak...

Chico Crypturellus soui y Chotacabras Negruzco Nyctipolus nigres...
We describe a predation event on the snake Mastigodryas boddaerty (Colubridae) by the Whistling Heron Syrigma sibilatrix (Ardeidae) in the Venezuelan llanos. The Whistling Heron seems to include snakes occasionally in its diet as indicated by our observation, which also provide the second species of snake recorded in the diet of this heron. © 2015,...
The dispersal syndrome hypothesis states that plant diaspores show morphological features that are the results of adaptation for dispersal by a particular vector. This can enable to identify the relative importance of dispersal agents within plant communities. Nevertheless, there is still little information about seed dispersal spectra and diaspore...
I report an aberrant record of Hoatzin Opisthocomus hoazin in the Andes of Lara, Venezuela. During field work in July 2011 in the Yacambú National Park, in an area of premontane cloud forest, I observed and photographed an individual of O. hoazin in El Blanquito reservoir. This is the first record of the species in Lara State, and apparently the hi...
The remote Nangaritza Valley of southeast Ecuador has high bird diversity, combining Amazonian birds with
species typical of eastern Andean slopes and foothills, a small number of taxa endemic to the Cordillera del Cóndor region
of southern Ecuador and northern Peru, as well as a few forms from the dry Marañón valley region. Here, we update and
rev...
Napo y Zamo...
Records of 28 species that extend our knowledge of their status and distribution in the eastern lowlands of Ecuador are presented, among them the fourth record of Pale-eyed Blackbird Agelastkus xanthophthalmus in the country, only the ninth Ecuadorian locality for Grey-bellied Hawk Accipiter poliogaster, and the first record for prov. Pastaza of Lo...
We present the results of nine ornithological expeditions aimed at
documenting bird diversity in areas of Ecuador that remain relatively under-
explored. The majority of new records were made along the western Andes,
either in the central or the southern extensions of the outer slope, suggesting that
several species may have more continuous dist...
The Royal Sunangel (Heliangelus regalis) is endemic to sandstone ridges in southeast Ecuador and northeast Peru. This hummingbird is currently considered endangered, although little has been published on its natural history, distribution, and conservation. We found H. regalis in three habitat types, but abundance was higher in stunted shrubland, at...
We describe the nest and eggs of the Chestnut-headed Crake (Anurolimnas castaneiceps) based on observations of two nests found in the border of the Lliquino River, Pastaza Province, Ecuador. Nests were found in June and December with birds incubating eggs. Both nests were on fallen logs covered by vines and epiphytes in natural small gaps. They wer...
New occurrence sites for two neartic/neotropical migrants and altitudinal extensions for five
resident species in the Ecuadorian eastern Andean foothills are reported, based on our field
observations along an altitudinal range from 600 to 1600 m elevation within three localities
along the Ecuador-Perú East Andes Endemic Bird Area (EBA). Gathering s...
I studied the membership and foraging behavior of Blue-crowned (Lepidothrix coronata) and White-crowned (Dixipbia pipra) manakins while accompanying mixed-species flocks in Yasuní National Park, Ecuadorian Amazonia. Observations were conducted during 2003-2004 in a 50-ha plot of evergreen tropical rainforest located in the south bank of the Tiputin...
We present records of seven species of tropical and subtropical distribution found in Quito and
adjacent areas, between 1974 and 2006.We include migrants as well as non-migrant species whose
presence in Quito is notable. Such unusual records might be related to high levels of deforestation
within their natural ranges, incidental migratory routes, o...

Nowadays, there are many studies focused in the phylogenetic structure of ecological communities. Most of these studies try to understand what are the causes of phylogenetic clustering or overdispersion, but can someone provide me with a case study of applications of these types of studies in plant or animal conservation? References are appreciated, thanks.
I am trying to assess the phylogenetic diversity of several tropical communities including distinct lineages, and I would be grateful for any references.
