Introduction
I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Amsterdam University Medical Center, with a background in psychological quantitative research methods. My research focuses on understanding and investigating resilience from a complex systems approach. In my PhD dissertation I present novel methods to assess resilience from empirical data using network analysis and simulations.

(For an interactive summary of the paper, see our web app: https://gabylunansky.shinyapps.io/PRPmodel/). Network theories have been put forward for psychopathology (in which mental disorders originate from causal relations between symptoms) and for personality (in which personality factors originate from coupled equilibria of cognitions, affect s...

Experiencing stressful or traumatic events can lead to a range of responses, from mild disruptions to severe and persistent mental health issues. Understanding the various trajectories of response to adversity is crucial for developing effective interventions and support systems. Researchers have identified four commonly observed response trajector...

Background In the construction industry workers are frequently exposed to hazardous substances. To explore and describe construction workers’ barriers and motives to (not) work safely with hazardous substances, we examined their perspectives on the health risks, perceived barriers and intention to use preventive measures with regard to silica dust....

Related to but distinct from biological and environmental systems, we define functional ageing as the interacting changes in physical and mental body functions, behavioural factors and social participation that occur as individuals age. We propose that a complex systems perspective to functional ageing can illuminate how outcomes such as quality of...

In psychology, regulation of measurement practices relies on the use of psychometric models that relate the targeted psychological construct to a set of observations in empirical research. Recent work has argued for a new conceptualization, in which psychological constructs are viewed as networks. However, in contrast to existing models, network ps...

Many studies have found that depressive complaints are associated with the regulation of affect while facing stress. Individuals inclined towards the experience of negative affect are more vulnerable to developing depressive complaints, while frequent experiences of positive affect buffer the development of such complaints. To better understand the...

Network analysis is a method used to explore the structural relationships between people or organizations, and more recently between psychological constructs. Network analysis is a novel technique that can be used to model psychological constructs that influence language learning as complex systems, with longitudinal data, or cross-sectional data....

To understand how compliance develops both in everyday and corporate environments, it is crucial to understand how different mechanisms work together to shape individuals’ (non)compliant behavior. Existing compliance studies typically focus on a subset of theories (i.e., rational choice theories, social theories, legitimacy theories, capacity theor...

Statistical network models describing multivariate dependency structures in psychological data have gained increasing popularity. Such comparably novel statistical techniques require specific guidelines to make them accessible to the research community. So far, researchers have provided tutorials guiding the estimation of networks and their accurac...

Resilience refers to the ability to return to normal psychological functioning despite facing adversity. It remains an open question how to anticipate and study resilience, due to its dynamic and multifactorial nature. This paper presents a novel formalized simulation framework for studying resilience from a complex systems perspective. From this v...

Over the past years, psychopathology has frequently been represented as a complex system, where psychiatric symptoms are causally interconnected in a network architecture. The network theory of psychopathology has led to more than 300 novel publications, academic courses, methodology for estimating novel models, and freely available software. Howev...

Identifying the different influences of symptoms in dynamic psychopathology models may hold promise for increasing treatment efficacy in clinical applications. Dynamic psychopathology models study the behavioral patterns of symptom networks, where symptoms mutually enforce each other. Interventions could be tailored to specific symptoms that are mo...

Background. Why does adversity lead to mental health complaints in some, but not others? Individual differences in the development of depressive complaints are related to the regulation of affect states. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a prolonged period of perturbations to the daily lives of people across the globe, providing an unparalleled oppo...

Inspired by modeling approaches from the ecosystems literature, in this paper, we expand the network approach to psychopathology with risk and protective factors to arrive at an integrated analysis of resilience. We take a complexity approach to investigate the multifactorial nature of resilience and present a system in which a network of interacti...

Background Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Argentina has been under mandatory quarantine. We have aimed to investigate the state of mental health of the Argentine population and the behaviours adopted to cope with mental distress during quarantine. Method An online survey was conducted using a probabilistic sampling technique and stratified accordin...

Network theories have been put forward for psychopathology (in which mental disorders originate from causal relations between symptoms) and for personality (in which personality factors originate from coupled equilibria of cognitions, affect states, behaviours, and environments). Here, we connect these theoretical strands in an over-arching persona...

Resilience is still often viewed as a unitary personality construct that, as a kind of antinosological entity, protects individuals against stress-related mental problems. However, increasing evidence indicates that maintaining mental health in the face of adversity results from complex and dynamic processes of adaptation to stressors that involve...

We outline a network method to synthesize a literature overview from search results obtained by multiple team members. Several network statistics are used to create a single representativeness ranking. We illustrate the method with the dispersed literature on a common misinterpretation of analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). The network method yields a...
