Macrophytes play an important role in the functioning and structuring of aquatic environments but rapid mass development of invasive macrophytes is causing global concerns. Macroinvertebrate richness and abundance are strongly influenced by macrophytes as macrophytes offer habitats and food resources, increase structural heterogeneity, and provide...

Permanent ponds represent important habitats for aquatic biodiversity and provide vital ecosystem services as key elements for blue landscape connectivity. Although mostly neglected in management programmes, protection schemes and biodiversity studies in general, ponds constitute habitats with high α- and spatial β-diversity, providing unique habit...
Presentation
Ponds, whilst being mostly neglected in management and protection plans, can constitute habitats with high α- and β-diversity, including many rare and endemic species. In heterogeneous landscapes, ponds can also contribute to habitat connectivity and enhance γ-diversity whilst delivering many ecosystem services. Semi-aquatic insects are one of the...

Whilst being small and shallow, permanent ponds provide valuable habitats for a multitude of organisms as well as provide habitats for animals like aquatic insects and others, including many rare species. These ponds, which were often neglected in limnological studies, were the core of our joint project, the 3rd freshwater project - EUROPONDS in or...

Macrophytes are key to the functioning of small shallow lakes (SSLs) because they maintain a clear water state through numerous positive feedbacks. The composition of macrophyte communities changes under anthropogenic pressures; as a result, tools designed to easily and rapidly assess their structure and composition are increasingly requested. We t...

Small shallow lakes (SSL) are reservoirs of biodiversity and provide numerous ecosystem services. Therefore, tools to easily and rapidly assess the biological integrity and conservation value of these aquatic ecosystems have been increasingly requested by environmental managers. In this study, we propose a new sampling method for monitoring aquatic...

Within the EUROPONDS project we looked into the contribution of aquatic invertebrates to terrestrial ecosystems, which are globally declining, in various countries all over Europe. Our study encompassed a restored quarry in Alpedrete, Madrid, Spain, a landscape destined for livestock activities. We hypothesized that the emergence during autumn and...

Small shallow lakes (SSL) support exceptionally high and original biodiversity, providing numerous ecosystem services. Their small size makes them especially sensitive to anthropic activities, which cause a shift to dysfunctional turbid states and induce loss of services and biodiversity. In this study we investigated the relationships between envi...

Abstract During t...

Shallow lakes and ponds are valuable ecosystems for conservation management. Aquatic invertebrates constitute a large proportion of diversity in these ecosystems, but their assessment is potentially time consuming and requires great expertise. The use of indicator taxa to estimate invertebrate diversity may resolve part of these difficulties. These...

Biomonitoring is central to the European Union's Water Framework Directive (WFD) and to the French water and aquatic environmental law, but most diatom indices do not separate different anthropogenic impacts. To address this gap, the effect of water chemistry on diatom ecological guilds and life forms was assessed in order to indicate stream pertur...

Chemical and biological assessments of waterbodies are required to fulfil the objectives of the European Water Framework Directive (EU Off J 327:1–72, 2000). Many past studies have been focused on water chemistry uncertainties, but few have been carried out on the hydrobiological aspects. Considerable research on macroinvertebrates has highlighted...

After several decades of intensive disturbances of rivers, biotic indicators were created to evaluate the more or less disturbed status of lotic ecosystems. Following the set up of the European Water Framework Directive, the objective is now to imagine restoration’s indicators, to highlight the potential effective results of programs engaged to imp...

Nowaday, there is an absence of monitoring method and biological index to assess biological integrity, patrimonial value or functionnality for French shallow waters. France is a large territory with high climatic, altitudinal and geological heterogeneity, and high anthropic pressure. Therefore, it needs to understand factors which determine macroph...

The European Water Framework Directive has required chemical and biological assessments in waterbodies. While studies of water chemistry uncertainties have existed for a long time, few studies have been carried out in hydrobiology. Our aim was to study the role of uncertainties defined as any action that may cause a data error on the French index “...

Hirudo medicinalis was encountered on two ponds of the Aquitaine region in France during the summer of 2014. This species had not been subject to official observation in the region since 1937. A summary of its status and ecology is proposed.
Article
The European Water Framework Directive (2000) imposed chemical and biological assessments in streams. If studies of chemistry uncertainties exist for a long time, few similar studies are still recent in hydrobiology. Our aim is to study impacts of uncertainties - understood as any action that may cause a data error - on biotic metrics (diversity, a...

In Europe, the number of establishment of non-native species, especially from Ponto-Caspian area, has dramatically increased over the past decades and induced important changes in macroinvertebrate assemblages, mainly in large rivers. However, although many Ponto-Caspian species were established in adjacent countries, only two Ponto-Caspian amphipo...

Project
EUROPONDS was selected as the 3rd fresh project, a joint call of the European Federation of Freshwater Sciences (EFFS) board and the EFFS Societies as well as the European Fresh and Young Researchers (EFYR) and representatives of the Fresh Blood for Fresh Water (FBFW). To evaluate the often overlooked ecological contributions and ecosystem services provided by ponds across Europe, we will investigate the taxonomy and biomass (‘biodiversity’) and the energy content and dietary quality, as measured by total lipids and their fatty acids (‘nutritional value for subsequent consumers’) of emerging insects from ponds across Europe. Funding for this project is provided by the EFFS-federated societies.
