In this work we present a water-driven clock (clepsydra) that uses the water that flows from a Mariotte flask to work. By designing and building all the elements properly, we get the seconds hand to make a full turn (1 min) at the right pace
Article

In this work we present a spectroscope that we have constructed for science dissemination in museums. The materials used are economical and easy to handle, allowing all attendees in the spectroscopy workshop to build, use and take home a small but useful spectroscope. We also present the steps followed to construct it and the STEM activities that a...

During the last few years, research in physics education has highlighted the interest of the Arduino platform and its associated sensors in improving teaching. In this paper we present a proposal for the study of thermodynamics in introductory courses. We have built a home-made Stirling engine with low-cost materials. From a theoretical study of th...

Research has highlighted difficulties experienced by students when studying quantum physics in introductory courses. In this paper, we present a teaching and learning sequence (TLS) aiming at introducing a quantum model of emission and absorption of radiation and we assess its impact on the students’ learning about atomic spectra. The TLS has been...

Problematized Teaching and Learning Sequence (PTLS) for quantum physics introductory courses. The document contains the student's activities and comments for teachers. It is the English version of the document "Introducción a la física cuántica - ¿Cómo se absorbe y emite radiación? - Material del profesor", located at "https://rua.ua.es/dspace/hand...
Article

http://polipapers.upv.es/index.php/MSEL/article/view/6675/7248 The effectiveness of the problem based teaching on the science learning has been highlighted by the didactic research. This teaching model is characterized by organizing the units around problems and by proposing a research plan to find a solution which requires concepts and models to b...

Our study sets out to identify the difficulties that high school students, teachers, and university students encounter when trying to explain atomic spectra. To do so, we identify the key concepts that any quantum model for the emission and absorption of electromagnetic radiation must include to account for the gas spectra and we then design two qu...

This book presents a problem based activities program for teaching and learning the Sun and Earth movements.
Article
The introduction of quantum physics in high school is reduced to the study of gas spectra and photoelectric effect, forgetting the wide range of daily applications. The construction and calibration of a quantitative spectroscope allow us to work with quantum models beyond the experiments that were used to establish them.

Research has shown how important is the history of science for designing and developing didactic units, for its value to promote learning and for its contribution to the students attitudes and the image of science that they learn. Physics faced a strong crisis at the beginning of the 20th century when the quantum hypothesis was introduced. The disc...

It's accepted that learning will be enhanced if students realize the difficulties that must have been faced when the scientific knowledge was established and how previous conceptions were changed for new ones. A model development based teaching strongly suits that porpoise. In this paper historical and epistemological key ideas, relevant for studen...

Conference Paper
Analysing the history of the introduction of the photon concept and its treatment in physics textbooks we conclude that the photon concept is taught in the higher secondary school without taking into account the historical problems that it had to overcome, which makes students learning difficult.
