Design/methodology/approach: The physical characteristics of milk were determined: pH, acidity and freezing point; and chemical characteristics: fat, protein, lactos...
Dystocia is one of the main causes of calf death around calving. In addition, peripartum deaths may occur due to other factors, such as weather or predators, especially in the case of grazing animals. Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) tools aimed at the automatic detection of calving may be useful for farmers, allowing cow assistance in case of dys...
Precision livestock farming (PLF) technologies have been heavily promoted in the past, but the implementation of these technologies is not easy. Numerous technical challenges need to be solved before PLF technologies will supply the desired information in a reliable and consistent way. Farm implementations regularly encounter difficulties. The prac...
The sustainability of agrosilvopastoral systems, e.g., dehesas, is threatened. It is necessary to deepen the knowledge of grazing and its environmental impact. Precision livestock farming (PLF) technologies pose an opportunity to monitor production practices and their effects, improving decision-making to avoid or reduce environmental damage. The o...
Single layer centrifugation (SLC) technique has been developed to select the best sperm population in the ejaculate in order to increase the fertilization rates by artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization. Normospermic ram semen samples containing 800 and 3,000 × 106 sperms/ml (C800 and C3000, respectively) were processed by SLC. Three spe...
This Research Reflection addresses the possibilities for Welfare Quality ® to evolve from an assessment method based on data gathered on punctual visits to the farm to an assessment method based on sensor data. This approach could provide continuous and objective data, while being less costly and time consuming. Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) te...

Aim of study: Dairy farmers in Southern Spain are continuously investing in the modernization of their facilities and frequently ask technicians about the type of housing they should choose for their farms. Although some studies have analysed the economic impact of different housing systems, there are no reports evaluating the impact of these syste...
Animal location technologies have evolved considerably in the last 60 years. Nowadays, animal tracking solutions based on global positioning systems (GPS) are commercially available. However, existing devices have several constraints, mostly related to wireless data transmission and financial cost, which make impractical the monitorization of all t...
In this Research Communication we analyse the animal welfare status of dairy farms located in southern Spain and test the hypothesis that monitoring of wellbeing could increase the profitability of dairy herds by improving indices of reproduction. Twenty dairy farms were visited and a total of 1650 cows were assessed using the Welfare Quality® (WQ)...

The real time knowledge of dairy milk composition can be used as a tool to guarantee milk quality and safety, offering additional information for dairy producers and consumers. To carry out these in situ analyses, methodologies based on Near Infrared (NIR) portable sensors have a great potential as an advisory tool. The main goals of the present wo...
Control and inspection operations within the context of safety and quality assessment of bulk foods and feeds are not only of particular importance, they are also demanding challenges, given the complexity of food/feed production systems and the variability of product properties. Existing methodologies have a variety of limitations, such as high co...
Presentation at 4th Dairycare Conference
Beef production is conducted through distinct production segments (farms, feedlots, etc) that may be characterized by differences in management practices, location and ownership. This is a challenge for the efficiency of the production chain. Most farms are cow-calf farms that produce calves to be sold to feedlots. Economic return of each animal de...
This study was carried out using a spectral database comprising 1164 samples of processed land animal proteins provided by a rendering plant located in southern Spain (Seville). A variety of cloning algorithms and strategies were evaluated for the transfer of spectroscopic databases obtained on a FOSS NIRSystems monochromator (FNS), currently in us...
Presentación de las oportunidades que supone el Big Data en el sector del olivar
The available NIRS scientific literature concerning the analysis of animal by- product proteins meals (ABPs) has shown that it is possible to chemically characterize these interesting protein sources for animal feed, and also to detect and quantify the species composition in a particular type of meal. Since, all work carried out so far refers to th...
Every day, a number of data are recorded throughout the beef production chain: farmers, feedlots, slaughterhouses, distribution and sales. These data are recorded mainly for administrative and traceability purposes, but they can be used to answer scientific and technical questions if they are pre-processed correctly. The objective of this paper is...

Data about the nutritional aspects of feed are systematically obtained in laboratories. Some initiatives are collecting them into large databases, but this information is highly variable, so data pre-processing is essential to ensure reliable results. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the performance of various methods regarding 2 aspects...
The information stored in animal feed databases is highly variable, in terms of both provenance and quality; therefore, data pre-processing is essential to ensure reliable results. Yet, pre-processing at best tends to be unsystematic; at worst, it may even be wholly ignored. This paper sought to develop a systematic approach to the various stages i...
Feed databases often have missing data. Despite their potentially major effect on data analysis (e.g. as a source of biased results and loss of statistical power), database managers and nutrition researchers have paid little attention to missing data. This study evaluated various methods of handling missing data using mining outputs from a database...

I have quantitative and qualitative variables in a dataset from a survey to farmers, and I would like to reduce the dimensionality of the dataset in order to identify main sources of variation. I think PCA is not valid for this kind of variables. Can I use factor analysis? Should I use correspondence analysis by transforming quantitative into qualitative variables?
