A $\sigma$-frame is a poset with countable joins and finite meets in which binary meets distribute over countable joins. The aim of this paper is to show that $\sigma$-frames, actually $\sigma$-locales, can be seen as a branch of Formal Topology, that is, intuitionistic and predicative point-free topology. Every $\sigma$-frame $L$ is the lattice of...

We characterize the category of Sambin’s positive topologies as the result of the Grothendieck construction applied to a doctrine over the category Loc of locales. We then construct an adjunction between the category of positive topologies and that of topological spaces Top , and show that the well-known adjunction between Top and Loc factors throu...

The notion of a complete Boolean algebra, although completely legitimate in constructive mathematics, fails to capture some natural structures such as the lattice of subsets of a given set. Sambin's notion of an overlap algebra, although classically equivalent to that of a complete Boolean algebra, has powersets and other natural structures as inst...

We characterize the category of Sambin's positive topologies as a fibration over the category of locales Loc. The fibration is obtained by applying the Grothendieck construction to a doctrine over Loc. We then construct an adjunction between the category of positive topologies and that of topological spaces Top, and show that the well-known adjunct...

Mathematics is often a hard subject for children, especially because they are usually not able to perceive any concrete connection between math and the real world. There is a rift between what they do for fun ad what they are required to do at school. This is partially due to the concrete aspects of the activities they do in those two contexts, whi...

A positive topology is a set equipped with two particular relations between elements and subsets of that set: a convergent cover relation and a positivity relation. A set equipped with a convergent cover relation is a predicative counterpart of a locale, where the given set plays the role of a set of generators, typically a base, and the cover enco...

A $\sigma$-frame is a poset with countable joins and finite meets in which binary meets distribute over countable joins. Aim of this paper is to present $\sigma$-frames, actually $\sigma$-locales, as a branch of Formal Topology, that is, intuitionistic and predicative pointfree topology. We show that every $\sigma$-frame $L$ can be presented as the...

With Raoult’s Open Induction in place of Zorn’s Lemma, we do a perhaps more perspicuous proof of Lindenbaum’s Lemma for not necessarily countable languages of first-order predicate logic. We generally work for and with classical logic, but say what can be achieved for intuitionistic logic, which prompts the natural generalizations for distributive...

This paper analyses the notion of a positivity relation of Formal Topology from the point of view of the theory of Locales. It is shown that a positivity relation on a locale corresponds to a suitable class of points of its lower powerlocale. In particular, closed subtopologies associated to the positivity relation correspond to overt (that is, wit...

Boolean locales are almost discrete. In fact, spatial Boolean locales are the same thing as discrete spaces. This does not make sense intuitionistically, since (non-trivial) discrete locales fail to be Boolean. We show that Sambin's "overlap algebras" have good enough features to be called "almost discrete locales". Keywords. Strongly dense subloca...

We study some connections between two kinds of overlap relations: that of point-free geometries in the sense of Grzegorczyk, Whitehead and Clarke, and that recently introduced by Sambin within his constructive approach to topology. The main thesis of this paper is that the overlap relation in the latter sense is a necessary tool for a constructive...

Giovanni Sambin has recently introduced the notion of an overlap algebra in order to give a constructive counterpart to a complete Boolean algebra. We propose a new notion of regular open subset within the framework of intuitionistic, predicative topology and we use it to give a representation theorem for (set-based) overlap algebras. In particular...

Several variations on the definition of a Formal Topology exist in the literature. They differ on how they express convergence, the formal property corresponding to the fact that open subsets are closed under finite intersections. We introduce a general notion of convergence of which any previous definition is a special case. This leads to a predic...

The notion of overlap algebra introduced by G. Sambin provides a constructive version of complete Boolean algebra. Here we first show some properties concerning overlap algebras: we prove that the notion of overlap morphism corresponds classically to that of map preserving arbitrary joins; we provide a description of atomic set-based overlap algebr...

We present a constructive analysis of the logical notions of satisfiability and consistency for first-order intuitionistic formulae. In particular, we use formal topology theory to provide a positive semantics for satisfiability. Then we propose a “co-inductive” logical calculus, which captures the positive content of consistency.

We construct a Galois connection between closure and interior operators on a given set. All arguments are intuitionistically valid. Our construction is an intuitionistic version of the classical correspondence between closure and interior operators via complement.

We classify imprimitive groups inducing the alternating group A4 on the set of blocks, with the inertia subgroup satisfying some very natural geometrical conditions which force the group to operate linearly.

Overlap algebras are complete lattices enriched with an extra primitive relation, called “overlap”. The new notion of overlap relation satisfies a set of axioms intended to capture, in a positive way, the properties which hold for two elements with non-zero infimum. For each set, its powerset is an example of overlap algebra where two subsets overl...

We study the concept of finitary formal topology, a point-free version of a topological space with a basis of compact open subsets. The notion of finitary formal topology is defined from the perspective of the Basic Picture (introduced by the second author) and thus it is endowed with a binary positivity relation. As an application, we prove a cons...

This paper provides a constructive topological semantics for non-deducibility of a first order intuitionistic formula. Formal topology theory, in particular the recently introduced notion of a binary positivity predicate, and co-induction are two needful tools. (© 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

We analyze the concepts of finite set and finite subset from the perspective of a minimalist foundational theory which has recently been introduced by Maria Emilia Maietti and the second author. The main feature of that theory and, as a consequence, of our approach is compatibility with other foundational theories such as Zermelo-Fraenkel set theor...
