Population blast, anthropogenic activities and climate change have caused first class protein like fish to be limited to consumers; the cost of fish flesh proteins are on the increase due to environmental pollution and overfishing has made capture fisheries a nightmare; this gave birth to fish farming/aquaculture and aquaculture advancement in biot...

Heavy metals concentration in water and sediment was investigated at the Motor Park Area and New Bridge Site of lower River Benue, Ibi, Taraba State. The heavy metals levels were examined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) Buck Scientific model 210 VGP using spectrophotometry techniques. The highest mean concentration of Zn recorded in...
A twelve (12) week investigation was carried out in River Donga, to determine the plankton and benthos distribution and abundance. Three sections of the River were sampled and human activities were considered in the choice of sampling stations. A total of thirty three (33) individual species of plankton and benthos were identified; sixteen (16) ind...
The knowledge on the fecundity and breeding of Malapterurus electricus can promote the commercial production of this species for its tasty flesh, though, to enjoy this species, the thick unpalatable skin has to be removed or smoked with it. Although, there is a high demand for this fish in the markets, it is very difficult to introduce it into the...
Medicinal plants have been known as immunostimulants for thousands of years. The application of medicinal plants as natural and innocuous compounds has potential in aquaculture as an alternative to antibiotics and immunoprophylactics. The growing interest in these plants has increased worldwide because they are easy to prepare, cheap and have littl...
This study was carried out to determine the fish farming practices, development and constraints among fish farmers in Ibi Local Government Area (LGA), Taraba State, Nigeria. A sampling frame was drawn from the list of 740 fish farmers registered with the Department of Fisheries and Forestry, Ibi LGA, Taraba State. A multistage stratified design was...
Effects of plastic debris to aquatic life.
ABSTRACT: The deleterious effects of plastic debris on the aquatic environments were
reviewed by bringing together most of the literatures published so far on the effects of plastic
debris on freshwater and marine lives (fish and wildlife) upon their exposures to the various
forms of plastic debris littered by man. Addressing the problem of plas...
This study examined the information sources and craft usage among artisanal fishers in Ibi Local Government Area of Taraba State, Nigeria. A total of two hundred and thirty-seven artisanal fishers (fishermen and women) were selected randomly from ten fishing communities in the study area. Data for the study were collected through administration of...
A thirty-six weeks investigation was carried out to determine the diversity and abundance of fish fauna and fishing activities of the Upper Ekole River in Bayelsa State. This research work was aimed at providing information on the fish stock and fishing gears used by fisher folks in this River. During the survey, fish samples were randomly collecte...
Several investigations have been carried out on fish parasites in many Nigerian aquatic ecosystems such as River Benue, Calabar River, Ebony River, Ponds and Homestead Ponds. Catfishes (Clarias gariepinus, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, Malapterurus electricus) and Tilapias (Oreochromis niloticus; Tilapia zillii) were subjected to test and some Ecto...
This study was on fishing inputs supply and benefits to fishers in Taraba State, Nigeria. A multi-stage stratifieddesign was used for selecting respondents for the study. Among the fishers, 70% of the population sizes of 264 among Tella and Mutum Biyu communities were sampled at random to obtain 179 respondents. Data were collected through structur...
Aquaculture requires adequate food in the form of artificial diet to furnish fish with nutrients for optimal growth. Trace mineral are recognized for their important roles in presenting proteins bioavailable in diets. Hence, zinc offers some solutions against the many inhibitory actions of plant base materials; however, its deficiency perturbs the...
As therapeutic regimen, antibiotics use pose some negative impacts such as residual toxicity, drug resistance, immune suppression, and reduced consumer preference for drug treated aquatic products in the market, hence, demand for nonantibiotic-based, environmentally friendly agents is highly desired for health management in aquaculture. The use of...
A study was carried out to identify the food and ornamental fish assemblage of the Lower and Upper Reaches of the New Calabar River, Rivers State, Nigeria. Surveys were carried out at the Lower (brackish) and the Upper (fresh) water course of the River for a period of fifteen weeks. A total composition of 92,385 fish specimens, representing 61 spec...
