D oes dual citizenship acceptance increase immigrants' propensity to naturalize and, if so, for whom does this matter most? We exploit exogenous variation in citizenship legislation in 200 migrant-origin countries to identify the effect of destination country policy reform. We hypothesize that the value of the origin country citizenship moderates t...
Does dual citizenship acceptance increase immigrants’ propensity to naturalize and, if so, for whom does this matter most? We exploit exogenous variation in citizenship legislation in 200 migrant origin countries to identify the effect of destination country policy reform. In Europe there is substantial variation in the costs associated with applying for citizenship both between countries and over time. Yet how the costs of applying for citizenship affect naturalisation rates among immigrants remains remarkably understudied. In the Netherlands, application fees increased markedly in recent years from 336 euro in 2003...
In this chapter we draw attention to the importance of a longitudinal and transnational perspective on integration processes and mobility aspirations of refugees. While there is substantial scholarly attention for the settlement success of immigrants and refugees, such research often assumes that the country of residence is the final destination, t...
The Netherlands faces a shortage of organ donors. Figures from Statistics Netherlands show that of Dutch residents aged 12 and over, only one in four is a registered organ donor. In July 2020, a new law has changed the system from ‘opt-in’ to ‘opt-out’, with the aim of increasing the number of registered donors. Under the new system, everyone is in...
The toleration of dual citizenship has become a global trend as states try to retain ties to their emigrants or to encourage their immigrants to naturalise. This volume examines changes in state attitudes to dual citizenship and their social impact, zooming in from analyses of global dynamics to a series of country case studies that illustrate the...
There is ample evidence that the possibility of holding dual citizenship is a key predictor of immigrant naturalisation. Over past decades, both migrant origin and destination countries have liberalised rules with regards to dual citizenship. Nevertheless, the acceptance of dual citizenship remains contested and a few countries have gone against th...
What are the long-term differences in the propensity of immigrants to acquire destination country citizenship under different institutional contexts and how do these vary between migrant groups? This paper draws on micro-level longitudinal data from administrative registers in Denmark, the Netherlands, and Sweden –three countries with widely differ...
The notion that naturalisation matters for the economic integration of immigrants is well established in the literature, but why and to whom that is, remains surprisingly ambiguous. The citizenship premium is traditionally assumed to result from increased labour market access and positive signalling towards employers, but these mechanisms fail to e...
This article pioneers in investigating a citizenship premium for homeownership of first-generation immigrants, using Dutch register data from Statistics Netherlands (N = 106,187). I hypothesize that naturalization favourably influences the risk-calculation of lenders through positive signalling among employed migrants, who are likely to meet the ba...
Can citizenship improve the economic integration of immigrants, and if so, how? Scholars traditionally understand a citizenship premium in the labour market, besides access to restricted jobs, as the result of a positive signal of naturalisation towards employers. While we do not discard these mechanisms, we argue that explanations should also take...
Bovendien laat...
The role of religion for organ donation
This article analyzes the relationship between religiosity and organ donation, using unique Dutch register- and survey data of almost 400.000 individuals. One in four of the Dutch population ages 12 years and above is registered as an organ donor. Non-religious individuals are more likely to give permission f...
In this paper, we analyze citizenship acquisition among first generation immigrants in the Netherlands using unique, micro-level longitudinal data from Statistics Netherlands. We find evidence that naturalisation is part of a larger life course trajectory. Furthermore, migrants naturalise later and less often under more restrictive institutional co...
Traditionally, immigrants’ propensity to naturalize is attributed to individual characteristics and the origin country. Recently scholars increasingly recognise that naturalisation decisions do not take place in a vacuum: they are conditioned both by the individual life course of immigrants, such as the age at migration and family situation, as wel...
