We monitored grazing behavior and habitat selection of Argentine Criollo (AC), South American heritage cattle breed, and Angus (AA) cows during summer and winter of 2016 (wetter year) and 2017 (drier year) at a site in La Rioja, Argentina. In each year and season, five AC and five AA cows were fitted with GPS collars configured to log animal positi...

The Tandilia System, located in the Southern Pampa region of Argentina, contains areas with conservation value scattered throughout its agricultural landscape. Unfortunately, efforts for their conservation and sustainable management are scarce and isolated, which may be explained by the lack of articulation and linkage between the different social...

Agroecology emerges as an alternative for the sustainable use of natural grasslands. Planned grazing generates virtuous circles in agroecosystems. The objective in this study was to characterize vegetation attributes in farms where grazing is planning in order to recover biodiversity. In 10 farms from Flooding and Southern Pampa, 159 sampling point...

In many areas of the agriculturalized Pampas of Argentina, rural roadsides (RRS) are the only relics of the grassland biome that originally dominated the region. Nowadays, no policies regulate the use and preservation of these environments. We assessed plant species diversity in 28 RRS in a representative area of the Southern Pampean region, and in...

Native pampas natural grasslands are the main forage resource in pastoral livestock systems in the eastern part of the Buenos Aires province (Pampa Deprimida) and in some relicts of Pampa Occidental and Pampa Austral. However, the plasticity of some crops, and technological inputs packages allow them to be sown in areas that are not suitable for thi...

Festuca alta, Schedonorus arundinaceus (Schreb.)

Rural roadsides (RRS) are key elements for conserving biodiversity and ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes. Their restoration and management require simple protocols to assess (diagnose) their conservation status and ecological functionality. We elaborated a conservation value index (CVI) of RRS by constructing a decision tree based on th...

Connectivity losses lead to a reduction of the amount of habitat resources that can be reached and used by species, and hence to a decline in the ranges and abundance of multiple taxa. Despite the recognized important role of small habitat patches for many species inhabiting fragmented landscapes, their potential contribution as stepping stones for...

Oil fatty acid composition of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) closely depends on the environmental conditions during grain filling. Temperature and solar radiation are main environmental factors driving oil chemical composition, as revealed by experiments in which the effects of these variables were investigated separately. The present work aims a...

The fraction of intercepted photosynthetic active radiation (fPAR) is a key variable used by the Monteith model to estimate the net primary productivity (NPP). This variable can be assessed by vegetation indices (VIs) derived from spectral remote sensing data but several factors usually affect their relationship. The objectives of this work were to...

information about forage productivity and its interactions with cultural practices or climatic variation is necessary to plan livestock management and to increase production without damaging the environment. Remote sensing provides a Valuable data source to achieve these goals. Here we characterize forage production over a large region (92 million...

Project
Potential areas for nature conservation in the Tandilia System of Argentina (Pampas region) still persist in the agricultural-dominated landscape in small hills and outcrops (sierras and cerrilladas), streams, small lagoons and their buffer areas, and roadsides, among others. Many of these areas have been studied from different perspectives and dimensions under multiple objectives (i.e. biodiversity, ecosystem services, structure and function, roles, cultural value, etc.) and some of them are critical biodiversity hotspots and a source of germoplasms and ecosystem services. However, until now the efforts for their conservation and sustainable management are scarce, being represented in isolated cases (areas) and without an integrated planning. We hypothesized that the lack of successful conservation strategies in the system is due to a great disconnection between humans and nature, and among humans themselves. In other words, there is a lack of coordination and linkage between different social actors (i.e. governmental institutions, farmers, and academic researchers) on environmental matters, and between them and the ecological structure. Our main goal is to generate a conceptual model that includes ecological resources (non-cropped lands conservation status and connectivity), the management that farmers perform on them, scientific investigations, and governance objectives on conservation, along with an explicit representation on how all these entities are connected to each other.
