Drylands are very susceptible to the effects of climate change due to water stress. One possible climate change adaptation measure is the construction of lakes to increase water availability for drinking and irrigation (food production) and decrease fire risk. These lakes can also increase local biodiversity and human well-being. However, other non...

This Doctoral thesis aims at building an alternative, sustainable monetary theory for our economies. It combines empirical observations of complementary currency experiments with the theoretical principles of ecological and degrowth economics. The thesis starts with a critical analysis of the current monetary and banking system in western economies, and with a comprehensive literature review of alternatives, focusing on community currencies and their influence on real economic variables. Together with concrete observations retrieved from field work, involving interviews with local experts as well as quantitative data from best practices in Europe, a new currency is designed, implemented, monitored and evaluated through the use of Participatory Action-Research methodologies, such as focus groups and scenario workshops. Based on this results an attempt is made towards an integrated Sustainable Monetary theory through macroeconomic simulations in a post-Keynesian model in which the stability, sustainability and resilience of our economics is assessed.
