Introduction
I am a political scientist specialized in the field of East Asian Studies. My main research interest is the way aesthetic practices (especially cinema) intervene in ideological confrontations and democratization processes in modern East Asia (with a special focus on postwar Japan), and how the analysis of these interventions helps to gain a better understanding of the political phenomena of the societies from which they emerge.

Although much has been written about the political theories of several thinkers associated with the Japanese New Left, to gain a better understanding of those theories, a perspective that conceives them as a conversation within a unitary (but sometimes contradictory) ideology is needed. Likewise, we know little about how media forms other than the...
This introductory essay contextualizes the articles that comprise the special issue by focusing on a historical period known as the ”Japanese long 1968” or the “season of politics” (roughly 1966 to 1972), in order to address the trends in the period’s cinematic production as a social and political expression of its time. The prevailing socio-politi...
Blai Guarné, ed. 2018. Antropología de Japón. Identidad, discurso y representación. Barcelona: Bellaterra. 312 pp.
A dialogue with filmmakers Carla Simón and Celia Rico about the influence of Japanese cinema on their award-winning debut films Summer 1993 (Estiu 1993, 2017) and Journey to a Mother's Room (Viaje al cuarto de una madre, 2018) and their filmographies.
From melodramas to experimental documentaries to anime, mass media in Japan constitute a key site in which the nation’s social memory is articulated, disseminated and contested. Through a series of stimulating case studies, this volume examines the political and cultural representations of Japan’s past, showing how they have reinforced personal and...
Starting from the perspective that national cinema is not a neutral concept, but rather a film expression with ideological implications, in this article I will argue that what should be analysed in films is not what connects them to certain nations, but with certain ideologies. Rather than claiming the national nature of a film, it is more accurate...
Terayama Shūji is as important counterculturally to the late 1960s and early 1970s as the philosopher Takaaki Yoshimoto was intellectually. Through the analysis of Terayama’s film Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets (Sho o Suteyo, Machi e Deyō), this paper explores a premise little discussed in publications in English so far: namely, that t...
