The technological evolution of the photovoltaic energy along with a reduction in the costs of the photovoltaic materials and an absolute necessity for obtaining clean power, without producing any damage to the health and aiming not to deplete the natural resources are some of the reasons that lead to foresee that facades and roofs are in the near future, being covered by materials that can capture solar thermal power they will present three usages: insulation (passive efficiency), heating source (hot water) and electric energy (active efficiency). This Thesis presents a methodology to determine an appropriate orientation and location of the photovoltaic elements over the building envelope so an optimum use of the solar irradiation is achieved. The created models can be transferred to any building envelope and geographic situation, hence they enable to evaluate different solutions that permit to obtain efficient solar installations depending on users necessities. The proposed methodology is supported by numerical models that simulate the electricity generation of the photovoltaic elements in function of the irradiation solar capture. The shading effect of building obstacles, adjacent buildings, urban and mountainous areas in the irradiation solar incidence among different environments is one of the most outstanding contributions to the research. The obtained results are presented in the form of time series so each point of the building envelope can be analyzed both, annually or seasonally. Once the scenario has been defined, the developed models look for all the possible objects that can produce any shadow during the year depending on the solar vector, giving as a result the iso-irradiance curves of the building envelope. This methodology also enables to analyze the gain or loss of irradiation over the façade integrated elements, which have traditionally been designed for protecting the interior of the building from a excessive solar radiation (facing, canopies, horizontal and vertical over hangs); it obtains the most suitable orientation for fixed elements and quantifies the improvement of the efficiency if the elements are provided with solar tracking.(azimuth rotation, zenital rotation or lineal displacement along the façade). Additionally, numerical models for estimating the irradiation solar level in each point of the building envelope of an urban area are proposed. These tools combine both, LiDAR point maps (Laser Detection and Ranging) with Solar Irradiation Data). The methodology has been successfully verified through having been applied to different real solar photovoltaic installations. This Thesis presents a very useful methodology for keeping advancing in the architectural integration of this type of energy around urban areas. Using facades for obtaining solar power is one of the most promising solutions for the photovoltaic integration in the buildings of the cities.
