Rangeland cattle production is the largest agricultural sector of Uruguay. Ranches produce up to three products (beef, sheep-meat, and wool) usually combined into an equivalent meat (EM) index. The objective is to compare the empirical results from the estimation of a single output stochastic production frontier (SPF) and a multi-output stochastic...

This study analyzes technological differences between two groups of dairy farms in Uruguay, family and business-managed. The meta-frontier methodology is applied to estimate and compare technical effi ciencies between these two groups. Although business-managed farms are more technically effi cient than family farms (0.702 and 0.487, respectively)...

The productivity of Uruguayan dairy farms has been consistently growing for the last 40 years. This process has implied the adoption of new technologies, which have had significant effects on the production system. The efficiency with which available technologies are used influence output growth. Hence, assuring and enhancing dairy farms’ productiv...

This study provides an estimate of the gross value of irrigation water from the U.S. High Plains Aquifer. We estimate a yield function for aggregated crop biomass production, based on countylevel observations for 1960–2007. This study found that irrigation increases total biomass yield in this region by an average of 51%. We estimate the average gr...

Rangeland cattle production is the largest agricultural sector of Uruguay. It has shown a slow improvement in productivity over the last three decades. Ranches produce up to three products (beef, sheepmeat , and wool) usually combined into an equivalent meat index. Recent research (Garcia, Fulginiti and Perrin, 2018) has shown the that the extra agricultural production from irrigation across the High Plains Aquifer (HPA) was worth about $3.5 billion in 2007, $2 billion of which was produced in Nebraska. The aquifer water is valuable!

Beef cattle production is Uruguay’s flagship economic activity. Some farmers maintain some areas of “improved pastures” that include partial substitution of native grass by high productive high quality seeded species, for direct grazing or deferred and offered as hay or silage during wintertime. Uruguay raised average beef production from 75 to 99...

The objective of this work is to understand which practices lead a rice-field to be on the production frontier, and to identify the sources of productive inefficiency. A production frontier was defined using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methodology. Four different types of efficiency were estimated: technical, scale, allocative, and economic...

The High Plains aquifer provides water for crop production among other uses in a vast region of the U.S. Midwest. In some areas the water table has dropped to levels that make agricultural production economically infeasible. Depletion of the aquifer might impose a threat to food security as this region contributes largely to national and internatio...
Conference Paper
The objective of the paper is to provide an estimate of the use value of the High Plains aquifer in agriculture. A region-wide production function for the crop sector is estimated. Using the production response to irrigation we estimate the value of groundwater for agriculture in $231/acre at 2007 prices.
Article
The High Plains aquifer is the primary source of water for agriculture irrigation in this area of the United States. This region extends from southern South Dakota to northern Texas and most of it has a low precipitation regime that makes irrigation an important input. The aquifer is almost a non-renewable resource since recharge is quite low. The...

Deaton and Muellbauer (1980, p. 50) summarized the important consequences derived from the duality in the theory of demand as follows: “Utility maximization results in demand functions that add up, are homogeneous of degree zero, and have symmetric, negative semidefinite compensated price responses. Conversely, demand functions that add up, are hom...

Massive adoption of transgenic products by world's agricultural production will affect patterns of world trade to the extent that some consumer markets impose restrictions on GMO production, marketing and consumption. This eventually leads to a market segregation between those who are indifferent to GMO consumption and those who prefer to consume GM-free (or natural) products. For Uruguay, this global trend involves costs and benefits that should be assessed for determining its best commercial strategy. The present study analyzes these effects on rice using a computable general equilibrium model that allows choosing the national welfare maximizing alternative.
