The correlates of species richness and conservation status of South American rodents were studied by analyzing the ranges of 791 species (belonging to 159 genera and 16 families). The distribution data (size of each species’ range in km2) and the relative quantity of each macrohabitat type (in km2) were obtained from the Global Mammal Assessment da...
Comparing species checklists across countries can be important for determining the relative uniqueness of each country, which can be conveniently defined on the basis of the number of species occurring only in that country or, at most, in one of its neighboring countries. Production of accurate country checklists is complicated by the fact that, es...
Current levels of endangerment and historical trends of species and habitats are the main criteria used to direct conservation efforts globally. Estimates of future declines, which might indicate different priorities than past declines, have been limited by the lack of appropriate data and models. Given that much of conservation is about anticipati...
Detailed large-scale information on mammal distribution has often been lacking, hindering conservation efforts. We used the information from the 2009 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as a baseline for developing habitat suitability models for 5027 out of 5330 known terrestrial mammal species, based on their habitat relationships. We focused on t...
We need to set priorities for conservation because we cannot do everything, everywhere, at the same time. We determined priority areas for investment in threat abatement actions, in both a cost-effective and spatially and temporally explicit way, for the threatened mammals of the world. Our analysis presents the first fine-resolution prioritization...
Country-based patterns of total species richness, endemicity, and threatened species richness in African rodents and insectivores
are studied in this paper. We found several patterns which were similar between insectivores and rodents. Indeed, in both
groups we observed: (i) a significantly uneven distribution of species richness across countries a...
Despite substantial conservation efforts, biodiversity continues to decline and further conservation action is needed. This imposes significant opportunity cost on local communities, particularly in developing countries where livelihood depends strictly on land use and agricultural activities. Incorporating socio-economic data into methods for the...

Identifying conservation priorities is crucial in the modern world, and biodiversity hotspots have been vital instruments in better defining the main areas requiring conservation. This paper analyzes distribution patterns of threatened Soricomorpha genera and species to evaluate whether the current biodiversity hotspots network really covers these...
Assessing Biodiversity Declines
Understanding human impact on biodiversity depends on sound quantitative projection. Pereira et al. (p. 1496 , published online 26 October) review quantitative scenarios that have been developed for four main areas of concern: species extinctions, species abundances and community structure, habitat loss and degradati...
The Earth’s resources are finite, therefore planning for their use requires the definition of broad goals and the formulation of operational targets derived from goals, that enable decisions to be made and success measured. The objective of this study was to review methods for the formulation of percentage conservation targets for the coverage of h...
Knowledge of mammalian diversity is still surprisingly disparate, both regionally and taxonomically. Here, we present a comprehensive
assessment of the conservation status and distribution of the world's mammals. Data, compiled by 1700+ experts, cover all 5487 species, including marine mammals. Global macroecological patterns are very different for...

The identification of priority sites that ensure the achievement of conservation goals is key to direct conservation efforts. An estimation of the level of vulnerability of each priority area allows the identification of sites that need urgent conservation action. We present a systematic reserve selection for 1654 African mammals and amphibians tha...

Using global data repositories (for instance IUCN red list data, etc), we analyze, by systematic reviews and meta-analyses, the macroecology patterns of small mammals (Rodentia and Soricomorpha), with emphasis on issues that may have conservation implications. Our approach is wide and multidisciplinary, and covers most aspects of the ecology and natural history of these mammalian groups. We also analyze interspecific and intraspecific traits, working at a local scale or at a meso scale, in order to highlight the eventual role of intraspecific and interspecific competition in shaping ecological coexistence of small mammal communities.
