Owing to high tensile strength, corrosion resistance and low weight, prestressed carbon fibre-reinforced-polymer (CFRP) plates have rapidly increasing applications in bridges, tall buildings, tunnels, high-speed trains, automotive, aviation, satellite and shipbuilding industries. This article illustrates the design of an innovative prestressing anc...
Article
This article presents the design of a novel prestressing anchor for the carbon fibre-reinforced-polymer (CFRP) plates. This friction-based mechanical anchor can prestress the 50 mm × 1.2 mm CFRP plates to its full tensile capacity of 2800 MPa without any premature failure or slippage. The anchor is compact (100 mm × 74 mm × 126 mm). The anchor is e...
Article
Carbon fiber-reinforced-polymer (CFRP) plates have significant properties for applications in structural engineering, automotive, aviation, space, and shipbuilding. CFRP plates have the advantage over conventional materials owing to their resistance to corrosion, low weight, and high tensile strength. The coefficient of friction between CFRP plate...

Many of the power transmission line structures in Canada are more than 70 years old, and some of them are even more than 100 years old. Many steel structures (towers, poles, and gantry structures) are corroding. Many wood structures are decomposed. Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite poles are facing degradation from the ultraviolet rays in th...

For Canada’s net zero vision, power transmission line infrastructure is a very critical component for transferring the electricity from the power generation plants to the distribution line stations. Many of the power transmission line structures in Canada are more than 70 years old, and some of them are even more than 100 years old. Many steel stru...

Arsenic contamination in groundwater is a major concern in Bangladesh since a large percentage of the population relies on groundwater for drinking water, large levels of groundwater extraction for agricultural purposes and the impact of climate change depleting the groundwater table. Although the Sitakunda Distract in Chittagong, Bangladesh was ea...

In Canada, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec are the most tornado-prone provinces. In 1980-2009, a total of 1,217 tornados were observed in Canada, including one F5 scale, five F4 scale, 24 F3 scale and 119 F2 scale tornadoes. Between 1918 and 2014, seven F4 scale, 18 F3 scale and 126 F2 scale tornadoes were observed in Ontario pr...

For the design of any safety-related buildings and structures of any nuclear power plant project in the North America, the analysis and the design of structures for both tornado and hurricane generated missile impact load is mandatory. The provinces of Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta are the tornado prone provinces in Canada. Be...

Efficient use of pultruded thin composite plates in the mechanical and the structural applications largely depends on the performance of the anchor used at the two ends of the plates. This research studies the feasibility and effectiveness of an optimized, corrosion-resistant, thin, and light-weight anchor for the carbon fibre-based composite plate...

For the permanent nuclear waste disposal at the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) site requires the waste containers and flasks to be corrosion-proof. Consideration of the transportation or acceleration load and the fatigue load is critical component for the proper design of the nuclear waste containers. If a nuclear waste container is m...

For prestressed carbon fibre-reinforced-polymer (CFRP) plates, a special end-anchor is required in order to transfer the forces from the CFRP plate to the concrete beam or slab surface to avoid premature peeling-off failure in the CFRP plate. Since CFRP plate has a relatively low transverse compressive strength, the traditional anchors and clamping...

Ontario Power Generation (OPG), Bruce Power and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) are currently pursuing several nuclear waste management projects. In addition, OPG is currently pursuing their Darlington plant refurbishment; and Bruce Power is planning to start refurbishment of their reactors in few years time. For these projects, the proper desi...
Article
In order to utilize the high tensile strength of the carbon fibre-reinforced-polymer (CFRP) plate, prestressing of the plate is recommended. End-anchors are required for the prestressing of the CFRP plate. Although a number of anchors have been developed, the literature lacks a review of the existing CFRP plate anchors. This article presents a stat...

Traditionally thunderstorm climatologies have been derived using either surface station data or damage reports from the National Climatic Data Centre's (NCDC) storm events database. The use of either of these sources of information tends to lead to results that are biased towards either the surface station locations or areas where there are concent...
