Introduction
My current research interests are in the application of stable isotope analysis in the forensic area. Specifically, I am interested in developing methodologies for assigning origins of seized animals, from illegal wildlife trade, and timber, from illegal logging. In the same direction, our research group is interested in other forensic applications, as analyzing documents, drugs, and explosives, to infer origins, production methodologies, and other information.

Spatial patterns of stable isotopes in animal tissues or “isoscapes” can be used to investigate animal origins in a range of ecological and forensic investigations. Here, we developed a feather hydrogen isotope (δ ² H f ) isoscape for Brazil based on 192 samples of feathers from the family Thraupidae from scientific collections. Raw values of δ ² H...

SIA‐BRA is a data set that compiles stable carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) isotope ratios of terrestrial and aquatic animals sampled in Brazilian biomes and coastal marine areas. Stable isotope ratios are helpful in animal ecology for several reasons; for instance, they can be used to investigate trophic niches, energy sources (diet tracing) and to tra...

Tissue samples are frequently collected to study various aspects of avian biology, but in many cases these samples are not used in their entirety and are stored by the collector. The already collected samples provide a largely overlooked opportunity because they can be used by different researchers in different biological fields. Broad reuse of sam...

Understanding linkages between biotic and abiotic processes operating in highly seasonal environments such as the Savannas in the Neotropics is tremendously challenging but has been aided considerably through biogeochemical markers. Stable isotope ratios have been widely used as spatial and temporal integrative markers, signaling environmental info...

High δ13C in human tissues in Brazil indicate high consumption of C4-based sources due to the consumption of highly processed food and animal protein. The significant positive correlation between the human developed index (HDI) developed by the United Nations Development Program, and fingernail δ13C at the county level proved to be useful as a new...

Several previous studies on targeted food items using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios in Brazil have revealed that many of the items investigated are adulterated; mislabeled or even fraud. Here, we present the first Brazilian isotopic baseline assessment that can be used not only in future forensic cases involving food authenticity, but a...

Spatial patterns of stable isotope ratios can be represented in spatial models called isoscapes, and have been widely used to track biogeochemical processes in natural and anthropic systems. Isoscapes have the potential to improve isotope dissemination and interpretation of spatial patterns, increase scientific results appropriation by non-speciali...

Female choice for conspicuous secondary sexual traits, which often decrease male survival, is greatly debated in the sexual selection literature. The parasite-mediated sexual selection hypotheses suggest that parasite-resistant males should show greater expression of secondary sexual traits. Males in better condition should also have more extravaga...

Project
Project
Analyze Saffron Finch different tissues with the aim to gather patterns of stable isotope ratios intraspecific variation on a unique locality in Cerrado Biome and on two different seasonal periods. Investigate feather δ18O / δ2H to provide an isoscape that could be used to assign seized birds from animal trafficking to their last moult origins.
