Springs are perceived by human society as essential sources of drinking water, but on the other hand they represent peculiar and vulnerable ecosystems. They differ from other watercourses in the relatively high stability of their physicochemical conditions. As a result, springs represent ecosystems with an insular character, usually inhabited by sp...
From the family Athericidae, only three species (Atherix ibis, Ibisia marginata, Atrichops crassipes) are widespread in Central and Western Europe. Although predatory larvae of these species are an important component of many benthic communities, little is known about their distribution and ecological preferences. Aiming to fill these gaps, the dis...

Attempting to help reduce the costs of bioassessment of aquatic habitats, the aim of this study was to estimate how particular substrate types influence the ecological quality evaluation based on a multihabitat scheme proposed by the AQEM/STAR consortium. Samples of macroinvertebrates were taken from the Stupavský potok brook, a small, 4th order cal...
Hrdlicová E & Bulánková E, 2017. Ecological evaluation of monitoring sites at upper Myjava River.
The upper part of the Myjava River is being undergone strong changes since 2006.
Above the monitoring locality Myjava NAD (rkm 72.6) was a water reservoir rebuilt
to a dry polder in 2006 and the stagnat water has changed into realined channel
of the My...
The effect of longitudinal zonation patterns and macroinvertebrate responses to changes in habitat characteristics have been given a lot of attention. But studies of changes in macroinvertebrate assemblages along small upland undisturbed watercourses are still lacking. The aim of the study is to analyse variability in macroinvertebrate communities...
We analysed the influence of environmental stress (mainly deforestation of catchment due to windstorm) on
taxonomic structure as well as composition of functional groups (FG) based on zonation preferences and feeding types of caddisfly species in 11 streams (12 sites) with various environmental conditions situated in the High Tatra Mts, Slovakia. U...
In the Czech part of the Labe River and the lower part of the Vltava River, we examined if the benthic macroinvertebrate composition changed from 1996 to 2005 due to expected improvements in water quality resulting from socioeconomic changes in the Czech Republic since the 1990s. Special attention was given to rare and alien species. The four biolo...
Till now, altogether 50 species of dragonflies have been found in the Danube and its arms in Slovakia. One of the most
important indicator species is Gomphus (Stylurus) flavipes,
listed as strictly protected by Appendix II of the Bern Convention. Large population of Gomphus flavipes was found in the Malý Dunaj (Small Danube), in the area called Dan...
In this study we describe how the river morphology of seven High Tatras streams has been influenced in different ways by a severe windstorm that occurred in November 2004. A control site situated in an undisturbed area is compared with six sites in windstorm damaged areas. In 2009–2010 River Habitat Survey (RHS) was used to assess the character of...
Hydrobiological research of high mountain streams in the High Tatras was carried out in 2009–2010. We evaluated the influence of windstorm on caddisfly assemblages. To assess the influence of windstorm we focused on river morphology using the RHS method and evaluation of TAM, TOM and BOM (CPOM, FPOM, UFPOM) amount in seven streams. Site 1 was a con...

River Habitat Survey and monitoring of Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) were carried out at 19 localities of the Turiec River basin and Hron River in 2008–2009. The otter spraints and sprainting spots were sampled along 600 m stretches of the streams. Bank and channel features were recorded at 10 spot-checks and also continuously along whole the 500 m...
We achieved all six of our original objectives and can draw the following conclusions about the High Tatras:
• near-natural streams in most valleys are confined to steep headwater reaches;
• ‘rapid’ stream-flow channels are all very similar, dominated by boulders;
• vegetated mid-channel and side bars occur at a higher frequency than in other simil...
The paper deals with distribution of the species of the family Athericidae: Atherix ibis (Fabricus, 1798), Ibisia marginata (Fabricius, 1781) and Atrichops crassipes Meigen, 1820 in Slovakia. Larvae were collected in 2001–2011, there were examined 1606 individuals in total. Species Atherix ibis was found out at 102 sites, species Ibisia marginata a...

: The work deals with assessment of the water quality in the middle part of stream Vydrica in the Malé Karpaty Mts. Using benthic macroinverte-brates data, we calculated BMWP and ASPT indices to compare results of hy-drobiological researches from the years 1960, 1984 and 2006. We have found out, that the ecological water quality of the Vydrica stre...
Larvae of Athericidae as a part of macroinvertebrate assemblages were investigated at 13 sites of small Carpathians streams (stream order 2-5) and 13 sites of the Hron River basin (3 sites stream order 2-4, 10 sites stream order 6-7) in 2003 and 2004. Samples were collected by kick-ing technique from 100-m-stretches. 99 % of the Athericidae of the...

Unusual finding of Lacerta viridis (Laurenti. 1768) during the winter season in southwestern Slovakia.
Blown sands are natural pecularities of Slovakia. Present data about eolic sands document the features of the primary geological substratum as well as soil types, plant and animal communities in these special natural sites. Similarly as in Slovakia these habitats are endangered in the whole Pannonian region, so they require European protection.
A multimetric assessment system was developed to determine the ecological status of two types of stream in the Carpathian ecoregion following the requirements of the WFD. The organic pollution gradient was defined using Canonical Correspondence Analysis. Classification based on physical, chemical and biological data divided the tested sites into tw...
Fourteen sampling sites belonging to four stream zones (epirhithral, metarhithral, hyporhithral, epipotamal) of the Hron River were investigated. At each site, geomorphological, physical (using the River Habitat Survey), chemical and biological data were collected. In 2003 and 2004, macroinvertebrates were collected in two-month intervals with the...
The primary factor of the origin and occurrence of xerothermic biotopes in Slovakia is the position of the landscape on the border of two biogeographical regions (mountaineous Carpathian region and floodplain Pannonian region (Eupannonicum – edges of the Eupannonian xerothermic flora). Substratum-geomorphological conditions are the second factor. T...

Abstract: The occurrence of preimaginal stages of Diptera (excluding Chironomidae and Simuliidae) in the Tatra Mountain lakes, their inlets and outlets, and the influence of acidification on the presence of these taxa were assessed. At 21 sites, 18 Diptera taxa were recorded in 2000 and 2001. The most frequent were Dicranota sp. (73%), Pedicia (C.)...
The EU Water Framework Directive requires assessment of the ecological quality of running waters using macroinvertebrates.
One of the problems of obtaining representative samples of organisms from streams is the choice of sampling date, as the scores
obtained from macroinvertebrate indices vary naturally between seasons, confounding the detection o...
Bulánková E.: Using "River Habitat Survey" method in the fluvio-morphological assessment of the Hron River River Habitat Survey (RHS) was used to asses the habitat quality of 13 localities of the Hron River situated from source to the mouth and 1 locality of the Hron River tributary Zubrovica. Hron River is a left tributary of the Danube River and...
The objective of this study is to describe a high-mountain stream ecosystem, with the main emphasis on particulate organic matter, structure of food guilds and the impact of predation upon macroinvertebrates. In the brook Hincov the concentration of total phosphorus and coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM) increased considerably with the increa...
A living adult and two fresh shells of the freshwater snail Gyraulus rossmaessleri (Auerswald, 1852) (Gastropoda, Planorbidae) were found in the lower Morava River alluvial plain in SW Slovakia after thirty-eight years.
The dragonfly Leucorrhinia caudalis (Charpentier, 1840) had not been recorded in Slovakia before 2003. In 2003, we found two sites of occurrence of the species in S Slovakia. L. caudalis is very rare in its area of dis-tribution in Europe and it shows decreasing population trends in the last decades (STERNBERG et al., 2000). In 2000, 74 species of...
Cross-checking of species listed in annexes of the EC Habitat Directive with national species list of fauna known in Slovakia resulted into validated list of the "Natura 2000 species". There are 149 species of animals reported in Slovakia, which are listed in annexes 2 or 4 of the Habitat Directive (10 species are considered to be extinct in the te...
Askew (1988) listed six species of the genus Cordule-gaster Leach, 1815 in Europe but only two of them have been found in the Slovak Republic (David, 2000) till now. Larvae of this genus live in running waters. Larvae of Cordulegaster heros ssp. heros Theischinger, 1979 prefer I.-II. stream order sections with sandy to coarse sediment (Lang et al.,...
Thirty taxa of aquatic Diptera (excl. Chironomidae and Simuliidae) were found in the Gidra river basin in the years 1998-1999. On the basis of the occurrence of dominant and characteristic taxa 3 categories of biotopes have been specified: 1. Crenal and hypocrenal with the occurrence of crenophi- lous (Dixa nubilipennis Curtis, 1832, Dixa maculata...
