This article discusses the various affective and emotional dimensions of how racialised individuals understand and cope with the ambiguous question of ‘Where are you (really) from?’ Theoretically, the article argues that people do not necessarily ‘comprehend’ racism but sense it, and that it is through affects and being affected that they understan...
This article advances the debate on responses to experiences of ethnoracial exclusion by proposing a heuristic for comparative qualitative research. The heuristic is developed based on an overview of the literature and of existing classifications of responses. It first introduces a differentiation between cognitive and practice-based responses to e...
This article addresses debates on the relationship between elite cosmopolitanism and localism through the study of young elite cosmopolitans’ rationales in the context of talking about their future lives. Drawing on interviews with 24 students at an elite university, the article delineates three types of cosmopolitan meaning-making. Students embrac...
This paper addresses current debates around elites, education and cosmopolitanism. It studies disjuncture (and interaction) between cosmopolitan practices and aspirations on the basis of 24 interviews with international students at a British elite university. Specifically, the article discusses four cases of elite students’ use of cosmopolitanism b...
This article argues that mass-mediated public discourse produces a discourse on emotion and disseminates specific feeling rules for different groups of people by studying one of the most heated debates on immigrant integration in Germany during the past decade—that surrounding Thilo Sarrazin’s book Germany Does Itself In. Adapting and further devel...
This study illustrates how the emphasis structure of counterpublic discourses surfacing online can be predicted by that of the dominant publics that these counterpublics—at the argumentative level—so resolutely oppose. Deploying a single common case study design, the article scrutinizes a counterpublic discourse that surfaced in the comment section...
Research scrutinizing political talk online has been developed largely against the backdrop of deliberative discursive norms and considered political talk without a systematic analysis of surrounding mass-mediated discourses. By contrast, this study operationalizes counter-public theory as an alternative theoretical perspective and analyses comment...
Against the backdrop of the current trend to criticise elite-centred approaches to the study of nationalism, this article sheds light on ways in which elite and popular notions of nationhood are mediated. Thus, public discourse on national identity is explored as a discourse that ordinary people can influence and in which elites make claims to repr...
There seems to be a wide consensus in the academic community that the Holocaust is gradually losing significance in the German public. This development is clearly reflected in public elite discourse on national identity, where “Holocaust-centered memory” has ceased to be
hegemonic. In the literature, several interpretations and reasons have been pr...
