This chapter represents a contrastive study of the common Russian, French, German, British and Romanian patronym-based surnames. The aim of the study is to elaborate and evaluate name-based materials for five countries in the form of statistical data, then to analyse and confront motive-related surname clusters and their percentages in order to det...

The paper aims at presenting an ethnolinguistic analysis of the traditional toponymy of the Russian North based on the materials collected in field surveys of the Ural State University in Yekaterinburg between 2000 and 2009 and on the Russian monographs of Prof. Elena Berezovich "Russian toponymy in the ethnolinguistic aspect. Mythopoetic image of...

My aim is to give a general overview of sources of various information on onomastic studies. Here I argue that onomastic blogs and social network groups may function as an interface between the onomastic community and the public, hence they may be particularly well suited for public outreach and science communication. I will clarify where and how w...

After the establishment of a promising study based on the 100 most frequent Russian, French German and British surnames (SHOKHENMAYER 2016), we turn now to examine the occupational surnames. For our part, we set as a goal to clarify to what extent the pro- fessional occupations, or a professionally name-driven motives, are to be similar in Germany,...

In this note, we will focus on the translation of the neological term properhood from English into French. Since the 2000s, British Professor Richard Coates formulated a new theory of "properhood". The term in question was coined to designate the property of a lexeme to be a proper name. We associate the notion of proprialité thereto, i.e. the abil...

This project involves the analysis of about over ten million medical research articles from PubMed. We propose to evaluate the correlation between the onomastic class of the article authors and that of the citation authors. We will demonstrate that the cultural bias exists and also that it evolves in time. Between 2007 and 2008, the ratio of articl...

This article aims to discuss, firstly, the substantiation of a new discipline within applied onomastics with a short excursion into the historical domain, its relationship to other sub-disciplines, then its difference from toponymy, and finally to give examples of contemporary works at the intersection of geography, linguistics, onomastics, cartogr...

The Travel Diary of N. Demidoff is a valuable source of observations of the process of penetration into Russian of foreign onomasticon because it is both written in view of its publication, thus respecting certain rules of language, and at the same time it is a travel diary, reflecting the peculiarities of the conversational speech of that time. Th...

The studies of Proper Names start to be very fruitful. The present work allows an illuminating insight into some of the major issues at stake in contemporary proprial semantics. In fact, one of the main implicit presuppositions underlying onomastics is a certain vacuity, or, quite the contrary, superfluity of the sense. Our purpose is to acknowledg...

Question (1)
Question
I am aware that is an old question, but it is still actual (after the presantion of "the Theory of Properhood"). Do you believe in the semantics of proper nouns? Does it exist? If yes, of what nature could it be? Lexical, connotative, associative, pragmatic, emotional?
