Introduction
I research how to include the end-users of a design process, and how to facilitate the collaboration of discipline experts involved in the design process. I am specifically interested in the use of field studies as way to include end-users and facilitate collaboration across participants to the design process. I am working with a case-based research approach. I work specifically with design cases from ship design and the ocean industries.

Virtual reality (VR) is increasingly integrated into maritime design processes, and there is a need to better understand how it can support ship designers in their work. Through mapping and interviews, we investigated how VR was used in two design projects in the maritime industry. We explored two questions: What type of design activities and conve...

Augmented reality (AR) technologies support navigators by overlaying the perceived world with virtual information collected from the ship bridge systems. However, the variety of operational scenarios, types of ships and bridge equipment from different vendors requires an integration system that enables multiple maritime applications to employ AR as...

Human-centred design processes often include field studies to achieve effective design solutions that support user needs. Despite this, field studies are rarely used in maritime design because they are time consuming and because it is hard to ensure that the field study outcome will have an impact on the design process. One way of overcoming these...

We present a state-of-the art analysis of Augmented Reality (AR) applications for ship bridge operation. We compiled and reviewed what type of use cases were published, what type of maritime applications have been adapted to AR, how they were prototyped and evaluated and what type of technology was used. We also reviewed the user interaction mechan...

Navigating crew on ship bridges are often using a variety of systems that lack consistent user interface design from one system to another. Consistency across systems is an essential aspect for reducing human error and increasing user ability in workplaces where users interact with a variety of physical and digital systems. Currently, a lack of reg...

Current ship design processes suffer from two problems. First, the experiences of crew that operate ships are not included in the design process. Second, the collaboration between the different participating designers is not facilitated in the process. As a consequence, the frameworks for understanding the separate parts of ship design can be hard...

ONSITE is a research project that builds knowledge on how to implement human-centred design processes within ship design. The project focuses specifically on a field study methodology and the transfer of knowledge between human-centred design and engineering disciplines.

Doing field studies on ships to support maritime design is both time-consuming and costly. It is therefore important to make sure field studies are both effective (they produce the desired results) and efficient (they use the minimum resources necessary to achieve those results). Increased use of digital tools may potentially improve field studies....

How can we design engine rooms that cater to the needs of their human operators? How can we do this in a design process that involves multiple companies and competences? We report on a design case where we facilitated a human-centered, collaborative design process crossing two companies. We present the methods used and the challenges experienced at...

It is challenging to deal with the operation of ships by crew members in ship design processes. This is important, because the efficiency and safety of ship operations ultimately depends on the ability of human operators to use the technological systems designed for them, no matter how well the technology might perform. The challenge is that there...

We present a system that enables real time scanning of human avatars for use in virtual reality supported design processes. The system uses off-the-shelf 3D sensors to generate high-density 3D meshes and high resolution textures of human beings in real-time. Designers can insert real time avatars in virtual scenes using a game engine. Informal prel...

Designing and engineering for the maritime industry often leads to the development of complex projects, requiring the intervention of many actors and disciplines. Project actors need to build a common understanding of projects goals and develop a collaboration model for how they may work together to reach these goals. This is challenging because ac...

Ship design is a collaborative exercise that involves many participants from numerous disciplines, who are expected to manage a demanding set of requirements with a broad range of possible design outcomes. It is then usually a challenge to connect several highly specialised experts, each bringing their own perspective and tools, into a collective e...

The Open-H2O community is developing ocean technology with the aim of co-designing the technology; licensing under the Open Source Software and Hardware protocols; and gathering ocean data from its different technology users and developers. Protei is a fleet of autonomous, shape-shifting, sailing vessels for ocean exploration and conservation, crea...

"Protei" is the denomination of a shape-shifting hull technology. This document focused on Protei_006, the prototype for a potential fleet of low-cost, DIY, semi-autonomous data and pollution collecting sailing robots. As well as providing background information about the project, this handbook includes an instructional section. This section is di...
