The original description of Mugil gaimardianus has created various taxonomic problems in the past since the description is ambiguous and the type specimen is apparently lost. The name M. gaimardianus could not be reliably applied to any known species and was suppressed by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) (Bulletin of Z...
Cytogenetic studies were conducted on Mugil trichodon from Margarita Island, Venezuela. The species showed a karyotype 2n=48 with entirely acrocentric chromosomes (Arm number, NF=48). Chromosomes gradually decreased in size and did not allow a clear distinction of homologues, except for one marker pair, which showed a conspicuous secondary constric...
Sharks are suffering from intensive exploitation by worldwide fisheries leading to a severe decline in several popula- tions in the last decades. The lack of biological data on a species-specific basis, associated with a k-strategist life his- tory make it difficult to correctly manage and conserve these animals. The aim of the present study was to...
The karyotype and chromosomal characteristics of the characid fish Triportheus venezuelensis were investigated using differential staining techniques (C-banding, Ag-NOR staining) and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with an 18S rDNA probe. The diploid chromosome number (2n = 52), karyotype composition and sex chromosome determination system...
Conventional karyotype and nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) of C. macropomum x P. brachypomus hybrids and parental species are reported. A modal diploid number of 54 chromosomes and a fundamental number (NF) of 108 were found for C. macropomum, P. brachypomus and their hybrids. P. brachypomus shows a pair of silver stained chromosomes, while cell...
Some structural and population aspects of the fish community of Laguna de Los Mártires, a small positive estuary (1.9-25 PSU), located on Isla de Margarita, in the Southeast Caribbean Sea, were studied. During a year of monthly sampling at five stations, only 10 fish species were recorded. Of these, Oreochromis mossambicus (Peters 1852), was the on...
First evidence of an Osprey Pandion haliaetus preying
on elasmobranches in Venezuela
The genus Pterois includes nine valid species, native to the Red Sea and Indian Ocean throughout the Western Pacific. P. volitans and P. miles are native to the Indo-Pacific, and were introduced into Florida waters as a result of aquarium releases, and have been recently recognized as invaders of the Western Atlantic and Caribbean Sea (Costa Rica t...
Common octopus (Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797) is a very valuable fishery resource, and also plays a significant role in trophic dynamics in ecosystems where is present, so it is important to undertake parasitological studies on it, particularly scarce. Fifty two adult specimens of common octopus, from fishing activities at Margarita Island Northea...
We analyzed the artisanal fishery of the spotted eagle ray, Aetobatus narinari, from Los Frailes Archipelago, northeastern region of Venezuela. The fishing boats used in this fishery are constructed of wood, with 6-8 m in length, two outboard motors between 40 and 75 hp. The fishing method was gillnets (43.2 cm of stretch mesh). A. narinari represe...
A cytogenetic analysis by conventional Giemsa staining, silver staining, C-banding, and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was carried out on Brycon amazonicus from Caicara del Orinoco, Venezuela. The karyotype of this species is characterized by the presence of 2n = 50 chromosomes, a karyotypic formula 22m+14sm+14st, and a fundamental numbe...
Ctenobrycon oliverai, new species, is described from the río Orinoco drainage and its main tributary, río Apure, Venezuela. This species is readily distinguished from its congeners by the high number of series of scales above lateral line and by morphometric differences in body depth, head length, and interorbital distance. Statistical multivariate...
Among the stingrays, Dasyatis guttata is one of the species most frequently caught in several coastal and insular regions of Venezuela. In spite of its importance as a fishing resource, this species has been poorly studied and the status of their populations in the Caribbean Sea is unknown. In the present study, the catch composition by size and by...
The group of rays (Pisces: Elasmobranchii) is a traditional fishing resource, basically exploited in an artisanal manner throughout diverse regions of Venezuela. However, the abundance and biomass levels are unknown for the species most frequently caught in the fisheries. In the present study, we described the artisanal ray fishery from the Cubagua...
The first record of the species Squalus acanthias in waters of the Venezuelan Caribbean Sea on the basis of one female specimen (28,2 cm TL) is reported. The specimen was captured by the artisanal fishing fleet that operates with traps in the region of the Paraguaná Peninsula, Venezuela. The total length observed and the presence of a yolk sac scar...
This paper describes the karyotype of Odontesthes regia by means of Giemsa staining, C-banding, to reveal the distribution of the constitutive heterochromatin, and by Ag-staining and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), to locate ribosomal genes (rDNA). The chromosome diploid modal count in the species was 2n = 48. The karyotype is composed of...
