DC railway electrification was deployed at the beginning of the 20th century in several countries in Europe. Today, this power system is no longer adapted to the demands of increased rail traffic. Due to the relatively low voltage level, the current consumed by the trains reaches several kAs. So, in the worst case, the locomotives cannot operate at...

The grid-forming converter that supplies voltage magnitude and frequency is a key element for isolated remote communities, and then wear-out analysis is an essential figure of merit. Therefore, this paper proposes the two-phase three-wire (2Φ3W) grid forming converter applied in a case study of isolated riverside communities in the Brazilian Amazon...

Due to the intermittent characteristic of solar irradiance, photovoltaic (PV) inverters usually operate belowrated power conditions. In this scenario, commercial PV inverters can be used to provide ancillary services, such as reactive power compensation. On the other hand, over-sizing PV inverters by increasing the number ofinstalled PV panels can i...

Multifunctional photovoltaic (PV) inverters have been described as a suitable power quality solution in modern power systems based on distributed generation. The basic idea is to use the PV inverter to perform ancillary services, such as harmonic current compensation (HCC). Nevertheless, this extra functionality may affect the lifetime consumption...

Coagulation and flocculation are two fundamental steps in the water purification process, since they neutralize colloidal particles (impurities). The addition of aluminum sulphate, Al SO 2 43 ( ) , increases the level of water treatment, which is applied in conventional water treatment plants (WTPs). However, in many countries, the WTPs are not ava...

Over the last decades, the connection of photovoltaic (PV) plants into the grid has increased. In this context, the analysis of the PV inverter reliability became a target of study for many researchers in the area. The solar irradiance and ambient temperature mission profiles are highly used in the literature to perform the PV inverter lifetime eva...
Article
The first step of the design for reliability (DFR) approach in PV inverters is the translation of the mission profile into thermal loading. Most works employ only a one-year mission profile even though it is known that it changes year to year due to climatic reasons and randomness of cloud behavior. This work evaluates how mission profile length af...
Article
This work proposes an adaptive dc-link voltage strategy applied to a double-stage three-phase grid-connected PV inverter, in order to decrease the power devices and capacitors thermal stress, and increase the system-level reliability as a consequence. The objective is to reduce the dc-link voltage to the minimum value required to inject power into...
Article
The multifunctional operation of photovoltaic inverters consists in providing ancillary services to the grid, such as reactive power injection, harmonic current compensation, frequency regulation and others. These extra activities can cause higher electro-thermo-mechanical stress in the inverter components, affecting their reliability. Hence, this...
Article
Unbalanced voltage sags are common phenomenon in power systems which affects the performance of grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems. The unbalanced voltage conditions results in double-line frequency power oscillations. These oscillations increase the dc-link voltage ripple leading to higher stresses in dc-link capacitors. In this case, the li...
Article
The multifunctional operation of photovoltaic (PV) inverters consists in providing ancillary services to the power grid, such as reactive power injection, harmonic current compensation and frequency regulation. However, it is necessary to quantify the effect of those extra activities on the PV inverter life consumption. This work analyzes the life...
Article
In this paper a grid-connected single-phase PV inverter is employed as a study case in order to investigate the effects of different meteorological conditions on the reliability analysis. The lifetime evaluation of the power modules consisting of the PV inverter is evaluated, taking into account variations on the solar irradiance and ambient temper...

Conference Paper
With the increasing demand for electricity and the investment in photovoltaic systems in Brazil and in world, the development and improvement of this technology becomes more and more important. The characterization of solar panels curves is an important tool for analyzing the behavior and efficiency in standard and operating conditions. The analysi...

This work aims to design and assembly a characterization of solar panel using capacitive load. This device provides information that allows the user to increase the efficiency of power generation in photovoltaic systems. Detection of operation issues or abnormal conditions such as partial shading caused by dirt or objects can affect adversely the m...

Photovoltaic systems are highly dependent on climatic conditions in which they are submitted. The incident solar irradiance and temperature are the main factors impacting on the power generated by a solar panel. This paper presents three different models of a solar panel and compare, through simulations, their accuracies and efficiencies, and also...
