Introduction
I like to engage in research at the crossroads of identity, culture and media. Currently I am delving into the adaptation and localization of audiovisual products, whether television formats or videogames. I also have a particular interest in minority language media.

Within the UK-wide framework governing broadcasting regulation, Wales has no – or limited – power to influence the above discussed issues (see our first paper for an overview), and it is noteworthy that the Welsh Government frames the challenges facing the broadcasting industry as ‘a threat to devolution’ while the UK Government’s proposed reforms...
Latin America has suffered disproportionately during the COVID-19 pandemic. The human impact has been chaotically and catastrophically evident across the three countries we examine here: Colombia, Chile, and México. Those nations were already creaking under the effect of generations of neoliberal ideology: their intellectual, political, and ruling-...

2010) discur...
Chile, Colombia and Mexico have long been at the heart of neo-liberal experimentation and cybertarian fantasy. The former has denuded their ability to meet the needs of the citizenry in general, the latter to provide a democratic media. The contemporary pandemic has put these deregulated, privatized economies under particular strain – market soluti...
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted – across intricate borders, different geographies, and legal jurisdictions – that there is only so much that can be done in the way of governance to tackle the challenge posed by a virus. The pandemic is a global problem, one which has affected almost every country in significant and seldom-felt ways. Governmen...
Extra-terrestrial beings always have the potential to alter ‘the world as we know it.’ Whenever they appear in film or television, there is a debate about the possibility that we have, as human beings, to communicate with them. Linguistics and semiotics become keyelements in our attempt to bridge the cultural gap. Be it through mathematics, music o...

Much of the reporting of the tracing apps, tracking programmes, and privacy concerns during the developmental processes and the initial stages of the Covid-19 pandemic have focussed on pitting digital rights and privacy against public health interests. Undoubtedly, there is best practice in establishing a tracing app to respond to Covid-19 whi...

In the Caribbean city of Barranquilla, in the north of Colombia, young students were often sharing a series of memes through instant messaging services—be it WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger—which they found hilarious. The memes were edited stills from the Disney animation film Cinderella (Geronimi et al.) which included a variety...

In Colombia in 2012 the second “cinema law”, called Location Colombia [Filmación Colombia] Law 1556, was enacted with the aim of taking advantage of the nation’s natural landscapes as film locations and hoping to improve the capability of the local audiovisual industry. By 2018, 32 international film productions had received benefits from the Locat...
Third Cinema, World Cinema and Marxism offers an analysis of Third Cinema and World Cinema from the perspective of Marxism. Its starting point is an observation that of all cinematic phenomena none is as intimately related to Marxism as Third Cinema, which decries neoliberalism, the capitalist system, and the Hollywood model of cinema as mere enter...
This article provides a study of the main character in the comic series Boogie, el aceitoso from three convergent perspectives. Each of these perspectives stem from our own subjective experiences as young readers of Boogie, but they are also informed by current academic concepts. The first perspective addresses the character of Boogie as a false he...
This paper explores the narrative and visual resources used in Colombian comics, from 1992 to the present day, in order to describe dystopian representations of Bogotá city. Dystopia is generally understood as a negative view for humanity either of a possible future or an alternative present. These fictions are classified here as dystopias about a...
The cultural transduction framework, introduced in 2014, provides an organized set of concepts to study cases of audiovisual products that have crossed international borders (e.g. through TV format sales). The framework is presented here as an alternative to study adaptations, providing a holistic view of the practice which includes the conscious d...
TV Shows like Alf, Small Wonder and Out of this world, as well as the film Goonies, not only sparked our imagination, but brought us images of the US where kids would engage in exciting adventures. The late eighties were the highest point of Colombian Free-to-Air public television broadcasting, before the creation of cable companies in 1988 and the...
This study analysed coverage of the Iraq War during 2003–04 in the only Colombian national newspaper during the time, El Tiempo, to establish how the attributes of this conflict, as represented through this medium, were perceived by its audience. We conducted a thematic analysis of 500 news items and 71 letters to the editor (LTE) to establish the...
McLuhan’s idea of media as extensions of our physical senses has drawn considerable interest among communication scholars. In this article we present two media he addresses as representing extensions of human touch, or what he deems tactility, namely numbers and money. We discuss how the Canadian thinker positioned these media as extensions of the...
The Latin American incursion and participation in the trade of audio-visual formats is considerably recent, and has become particularly relevant with the rise of the trade in scripted formats. The region’s expertise in telenovelas has given them an edge in this type of formats, with Argentina leading a conscious strategy to take advantage of the ma...
This mainly qualitative research project aimed at discovering which of the identity elements of the Channel (Brand) have an impact upon exposition and, thus, upon the development of engagement by the audience. The project had three separate research strands: the corporate identity of the cannel (Brand), a content/textual analysis of its products, a...
In order to shed some light on how Latin American entrepreneurs are developing products for a globalised market and attempting to overcome cultural discount by making their products more universal in their appeal, we analyse the cases of the video game Kingdom Rush from Uruguay and the Zambo Dende audio-visual project from Colombia. To provide cont...
This chapter addresses the relationship that exists between intertextuality and cultural transduction in video game localization. Whereas the former refers to the dual relationship established between texts and previous texts available to the potential readers and the bridges that are consciously or unconsciously established between them, cultural...
Convergence seems to be a new concept related to the field of communication. Nevertheless it is important to remark that the idea of convergence is a classic one in order to understand the relationship between humans and communication processes. The present chapter depicts the evolution of convergence as a theoretical framework, from philosophical...
There is a common saying that goes, “Colombia is well known for all products that start with the letter C.” Sadly, comics are not among the products that come to mind directly after that statement. This chapter presents Colombia’s (non-existent) comics industry, and the works of those who, on the fringes of the economy, have strived to continue wit...
This paper addresses how different media production teams negotiate the use of their minority languages in their practice. After a brief discussion of the concepts of language and description of a linguistic minority, a short review of similar research in the area of Minority Language Media is presented. Within this area, radio producers from three...
Becoming immersed in a world where our perception of reality is highly mediated allows for the creation of an audiovisual lexicon that expands over many platforms and times. In this context we might observe the case of video games which, as a medium, does not limit themselves to the creation of puzzles to be solved, to pretend participation in the...
This review situates the book Considering Watchmen: Poetics, Property, Politics (2014) in the current
debates about characteristics and production contexts of comic books.
This paper discusses the current situation of indigenous and minority lan‑
guages in Colombia, identifying advances made in recent years, as well as chal‑
lenges–and opportunities–that remain. Although minority languages obtained
legal recognition in Colombia’s 1991 Constitution, and the 1994 Education Law
recognised particular educational rights f...
The topic of native and ethnic radio, as part of the lack of research on radio in Colombia, has been poorly developed (Cuesta Moreno, 2012a, 2012b). This article shows three study cases: Radio Nasa of Nasa Community, Jujunula Makuira of Wayuu Community, and Al A With A Wan program of native community from San Andrés island; it also explores the ide...
In an article that would later be considered the first step towards the development of the Minority Language Media (MLM) area of studies, Cormack provided a set of interlocking variables that he considered should be taken into account to assess the chances for success of MLM development. Since Cormack’s original remit was exclusive to Western Europ...
This article presents a methodological construction for research on small groups of minority media producers, especially those who are involved in multilingual settings. The set of qualitative tools are explained and their advantages and disadvantages explored, based on the literature on the subject. Then, the debate is contrasted with the practica...
This paper presents a theoretical and methodological revision which clarifies and organizes the concepts on the trade of audiovisual products between different cultural markets. It explores the concept of cultural proximity (Straubhaar, 1991) and the latest discussions on cultural translation (Conway, 2012) and cultural universals and lacunae (Rohn...
The fates of endangered languages are closely linked to conceptions of what value they provide to their communities. We examine how minority (particularly indigenous) communities in Colombia have understood themselves over time, as well as how the state as viewed them, and how definitions of communities and their relationships have historically bee...
This article sets a dialogue between the concept of medium -as presented by Marshall McLuhan- and the concept of myth -as articulated by Roland Barthes- to evidence their similar anchoring, and thus bring closer the work of these two thinkers, whose different starting points notwithstanding, converge conceptually to better grasp the notion of macro...
In Massively Multiplayer Online games (MMOs) and virtual worlds, the idea of authors seems to have 'died' or been 'wiped out,' at least from the perspective of users. The concept of authorship does not receive adequate attention or recognition in MMOs and online games in particular appear to deprive authors of their rights, both legally and morally...
This article seeks to debate questions regarding the field of studies of Communication, its subject matter, and the target audience for its advances. Beyond questioning the what and why of communication, it questions the role of bibliometrics as sufficient criteria to determine research quality, and proposes opening a public debate with the researc...
As a field in its own right, Minority Language Media studies is developing fast. The recent technological and social developments that have accelerated media convergence and opened new ways of access and exchange into spaces formerly controlled by media institutions, offer new opportunities, challenges and dangers to minority languages, and especia...
The present research explores the growing field of studies of Minority Language Media by focusing on two case studies, Wales and Colombia. The research seeks to answer the question of how the complex, hybrid identity of media producers negotiate their various identity allegiances in the preparation and broadcast of output for Minority Language Medi...
This contribution stems from a personal interest in expanding Minority Language Media research into the Latin American context. It also arises from a desire to present some of the achievements of Communication for Social Change in Latin America to a European media studies community not acquainted with them. In order to do this, the paper begins by...
The radio can encourage the use of minority languages, provided this function is established as an objective of radio policy. A look at the radio policies of minority ethnic groups shows to what extent they use the radio to keep their native languages alive.

We are aiming to do something similar about Latin Americna media companies, or media companies that have expanded to Latin America, so I was wondering if our research projects share interests or places and how could we then exchange information.
Considering the media modifications brought about by digital technologies, we are starting to talk about Post-cinema and about the need to update national and international legislation that defines and governs television.
How should television policy change to suit those technological changes, to prevent delving on previous media anchors (as pointed out by McLuhan's tetrad)?
Video games made in different parts of the world target a variety of markets by making their products more attractive to different users in processes of localization. Some others tend to aim for more "universal" appeal, and to do so they try to distance themselves from specific cultural references. I am interested in finding the ways, processes, debates and strategies used in this cultural/market exchange.
