Alkaline electrolysis is already a proven technology on land, with a high maturity level and good economic performance. However, at sea, little is known about its economic performance toward hydrogen production. Alkaline electrolysis units operate with purified water to split its molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. Purified water, and especially th...
Successful implementation of active learning strategies in the engineering classroom -- and in particular in certain subjects which are highly technological in nature such as, for instance, rocket engines and space propulsion -- means overcoming certain challenges that arise from the fact that these are extremely complex systems to analyze. In this...
The use nanotechnology along with the consideration of a functionalization and stabilization approach to the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was considered useful for the preparation of cost‐effective polyelectrolyte membranes. A set of nanocomposite and crosslinked membranes based in PVA/SSA/GO were prepared and analyzed as polyelectrolytes in direct me...
In the current context of demand for reliable, low cost and low environmental impact energy sources, many countries and companies are mostly focused on fuel cells (FCs) in fields as transportation, stationary power generation and portable devices. Lately, FCs have begun to be applied in naval and aeronautical systems due to their high efficiency, l...
Membranes commonly used in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) are expensive and show a great permeability to methanol which reduces fuel utilization and leads to mixed potential at the cathode. In this work, sulfonated styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (sSEBS) modified membranes with zirconia silica phosphate sol-gel phase are developed and studied i...
In this work, a natural gas boiler is compared with a system based on the combination of a solid oxide fuel cell with a heat pump from an exergetic point of view. The objective of both systems is to achieve the same effect: heating a home. The results of the analysis strongly favor the alternative based on the fuel cell and heat pump.
The use of polymers in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) would reduce their density and cost, thereby enhancing their commercialization. This work aims to select the most appropriate materials among seven thermoplastic polymers (ABS, CPE, CPE+, Nylon, PC, PLA and TPU 95A) for use as bipolar plates (BPs) for different applications of DMFCs. For tha...
This work presents a computer-aided automated design system to quickly optimize the constructive parameters of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) by minimizing a multicriteria design function that includes mass, volume and fuel consumption. In this regard, this work addresses the absence of procedures for DMFC stack design. Four main tasks were per...
This article illustrates a novel method to produce hydrogen at sea with no carbon footprint, based on alkaline electrolysis, which is the cheapest electrolysis method for in-land hydrogen production, coupled to offshore renewable farms. The novelty of the method presented in this work is the solution to cope with the logistic problem of periodical...
Recently, there has been growing interest in fuel cell implementation on aircraft, particularly for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) propulsion. The performance of both fuel cell types, cathode air-breathing H2 Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC/H2) and passive Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs), is dependent on atmospheric conditions such as...

ABSTRACT: Current commercial Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are powered by conve...
Abiotically catalysed glucose fuel cells (AGFC) can take two different forms, external and implantable. They can be used to power computers, mobile phones and other portable low-power devices, and to power implantable medical devices such as pacemakers or devices for electrical stimulation. At present, the maximum power density of implantable AGFC...

A set of mathematical expressions is presented to allow the determination of the water content in a PEMFC membrane, and facilitate the calculation of the water balance under variable conditions of hydration on both sides of it. The study is based on a cooperative model of water diffusion through the membrane, which avoids discontinuities in the cal...

A study on the electrochemical response and on essays in a single direct methanol fuel cell with electrodes consisting in Pt films deposited on carbon is presented here. Two commercial electrodes with different catalyst loading and two electrodes prepared by electron beam evaporation of Platinum have been studied under the same conditions.
An incre...
Platinum is the most used catalyst in electrodes for fuel cells due to its high catalytic activity.
Polymer electrolyte and direct methanol fuel cells usually include Pt as catalyst in
their electrodes. In order to diminish the cost of such electrodes, different Pt deposition
methods that permit lowering the metal load whilst maintaining their elec...
The possibility of implementing fuel cell technology in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) propulsion systems is considered. Potential advantages of the Proton Exchange Membrane or Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEMFC) and Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFC), their fuels (hydrogen and methanol), and their storage systems are revised from technical and envi...
The addition of hydrogen to natural gas could be a short-term alternative to today’s fossil fuels, as greenhouse gas emissions may be reduced. The aim of this study is to evaluate the emissions and performance of a spark ignition engine fuelled by pure natural gas, pure hydrogen, and different blends of hydrogen and natural gas (HCNG). Increasing t...
The use of alcohol blends in direct alcohol fuel cells may be a more environmentally friendly and less toxic alternative to the use of methanol alone in direct methanol fuel cells. This paper assesses the behaviour of a direct methanol fuel cell fed with aqueous methanol, aqueous ethanol and aqueous methanol/ethanol blends in a long term experiment...
a b s t r a c t Within the last years there has been increasing interest in direct liquid fuel cells as power sources for portable devices and, in the future, power plants for electric vehicles and other transport media as ships will join those applications. Methanol is considerably more convenient and easy to use than gaseous hydrogen and a consid...
Methanol and ethanol have recently received much attention as liquid fuels particularly as alternative ‘energy-vectors’ for the future. In this sense, to find a direct alcohol fuel cell that able to interchange the fuel without losing performances in an appreciable way would represent an evident advantage in the field of portable applications. In t...
Fuel cells have a promising potential use in stationary and mobile power generation systems, as well as in automotive, aerospace or marine industries. At present, the main field of marine applications of fuel cells is submarines. Hydrogen/oxygen polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells are commonly used in this field. Storage of oxygen in liqu...
