Most studies on inventory management under demand uncertainty analyse the detrimental impacts of demand variability (i.e., its coefficient of variation). Consequences of the shape of demand distribution (i.e., its multi-modality and asymmetry) have instead received only minor attention. This paper focuses on the study of the effects of the shape of...

Managing uncertainty when the demand is irregular and sporadic (i.e. “lumpy”) is a complex issue as well as an unexplored one. This study analyses the behaviour of forecasting techniques when dealing with lumpy demand at the master production scheduling level. In particular, three forecasting techniques (exponentially weighted moving average, early...

The evolution of production models raises a number of questions on the changes which are taking place, on the continuity of or break with consolidated models, and on whether new production paradigms are emerging. Traces back this broad and multi-faceted debate to five theses which summarise the principal interpretative approaches: the emergence of...

Most techniques for managing demand uncertainty require a certain degree of stability in the environment, since they are completely or partially based on the observation of historical data. When applied to a context characterized by irregular and sporadic demand these techniques show poor performances. In fact, in such a case uncertainty management...
