Introduction
I am an organizational sociologist whose research bridges the fields of organization studies and science, technology, and society (STS). I study institutions, knowledge production, work, and careers in academia. My research agenda delves into the organization and management of interdisciplinary research, collaboration at disciplinary and professional boundaries, academic entrepreneurship, and, most recently, ethical regulation in science.

This study examines the tension between the academic evaluation system and the development of unconventional research agendas. Human microbial communities are bodies of microorganisms that reside in or on different body parts. Importantly, they have been found to affect human health. However, scientific research on human microbial communities has created new challenges for human subject recruitment. First, individuals are asked to collect samples of bodily substances that...

Aim/Purpose: Given that leadership has been shown to play a key role in knowledge-producing organizations, leaders of transdisciplinary science have received surprisingly little empirical attention. This study addresses the research gap by examining leadership in the context of a new transdisciplinary research organization. Background: Drawing on c...

Boundaries have gained analytical prominence in sociology of science. Notably, there have been studies on how academics differentiate themselves from outsiders in order to secure their legitimacy. In university departments, scholars engage in boundary work to defend their intellectual communities and institutional resources. While boundary struggle...

Academic institutions invest in interdisciplinary research centers to promote innovative knowledge creation. As prior work on these research efforts has examined either established interdisciplinary collaborations or completed intellectual products, we have a limited understanding of how interdisciplinary research centers emerge and develop over ti...

Education systems originally emerged alongside the creation of the nation-state system with the goal of constructing a loyal, unified national citizenry. But at least since the middle of the twentieth century, schools also increasingly aim to promote and support diversity. This shift in the purpose of schooling, however, remains poorly explained. E...

Tarkastelen pro gradu -tutkielmassani sitä, miten eläkeiän kynnyksellä olevat suurten ikäluokkien mieskirurgit asennoituvat eläkkeelle jäämiseen tai työelämäkerran päättymiseen muulla tavoin. Peilaan eläkkeelle jäämistä työelämäkerran käsitettä vasten. Aineistoni koostuu kerronnallisista työelämäkertahaastatteluista, joista olen erotellut työelämäk...
