Characterizing genetic variation by retrospective genotyping of trophy or historical artifacts from endangered species is an important conservation tool. Loss of genetic diversity in top predators, such as the white shark Carcharodon carcharias, remains an issue, exacerbated in this species by declining, sometimes isolated philopatric populations....

Recent works (Evelpidou et al., 2012) suggest that the modern tidal notch is disappearing worldwide due sea level rise over the last century. In order to assess this hypothesis, we measured modern tidal notches in several of sites along the Mediterranean coasts. We report observations on tidal notches cut along carbonate coasts from 73 sites from I...

The Stellaris porject is monitoring embryos of the Nursehound (Scyliorhinus stellaris) onsite in the Santa Croce Bank (Gulf of Naples, Italy), the largest known breeding area in the Mediterranean sea. One year of monitoring, with regular monthly diving check-ups between -25 and -45m of depth, has provided interesting observations on seasonal deposi...

Tidal notches, long regarded as reliable indicators of mean sea level, have been extensively studied along carbonate coasts in the central Mediterranean Sea. Previous studies revealed a correlation between the genesis of tidal notches and tidal range, lithology, cliff foot depth, and wave energy. In the 2020 Geoswim campaigns at Lampedusa, the sout...

Tidal notches are thought to form at the sea level, with well-defined morphometric features with respect to the sea level reference. Antonioli et al. (2015) described the morphometric parameters of more than 70 tidal notches in the Mediterranean area. Anyway, some variations can occur. In particular, at the southern coast of Lampedusa (Pelagie Isla...

This study presents results of long-term monitoring activities carried out by SCUBA divers inside the Gulf of Naples, in the context of an ongoing citizen science project. In the last five years, systematic high-frequency measurements of the sea temperature have been performed at three different depths over the Santa Croce Bank, a shallow area in t...

MedFever – An expanding network of 12 small observatories was established in the Tyrrhenian Sea in 2021 by MedSharks and ENEA, building on the experience of an observation point established in 2016 in the Gulf of Naples. Very high frequency measurements (15 minutes) at some standard depths (5-15-35m; occasionally at 10-20-25-30-50-60m) were obtaine...

In late summer 2020, a widespread mortality event severely affected colonies of the Mediterranean endemic orange coral Astroides calycularis in the Pelagie Islands (Strait of Sicily, southern Mediterranean Sea). The degree of the mortality impact at seven study sites of the archipelago (five within the Pelagie Islands Marine Protected Area) was qua...

Since 2012 the Geoswim programme has been investigating coastal landforms along the Mediterranean rocky shores and their lateral variations, through snorkelling and field surveys. The focus of Geoswim investigation is collecting physical/chemical and ecological data relevant to the evaluation of past to future sea level changes. In spring 2017 we e...

The Mediterranean Basin is characterized by a significant variability in tectonic behaviour, ranging from subsidence to uplifting. However, those coastal areas considered to be tectonically stable show coastal landforms at elevations consistent with eustatic and isostatic sea level change models. In particular, geomorphological indicators—such as t...

The Mediterranean Large Elasmobranchs Monitoring (MEDLEM) database contains over 3000 records (more than 4000 individuals) of large elasmobranch species from 20 different countries around the Mediterranean and Black seas, observed from 1666 to 2017. The main species included in the archive are the devil fish (1 813 individuals), the basking shark (...

Migratory movements in response to seasonal resources often influence population structure and dynamics. Yet in mobile marine predators, population genetic consequences of such repetitious behaviour remain inaccessible without comprehensive sampling strategies. Temporal genetic sampling of seasonally recurring aggregations of planktivorous basking...

An ongoing survey in supermarkets and perfume shops provides, for the first time in Italy, a list of personal care and cosmetic products containing polyethylene. The objective of this survey is to raise the awareness and enable citizens to make informed choices as consumers to protect marine ecosystems - and human well-being - eliminating a form of...

The Mediterranean is one of the most polluted seas worldwide, with quantities of floating particles comparable to accumulation zones in subtropical gyres. A growing series of studies is investigating the impact of plastics on Mediterranean marine biota. A bibliographic review of Mediterranean elasmobranchs - the most threatened class of marine fis...

Citizen science can be defined as scientific research and monitoring projects for which members of the public collect, categorize, transcribe or analyze scientific data. From reporting alien or rare species, range shifts or phenology, to the opportunity to access extreme environments such as caves or depths beyond the range of SCUBA gear, citizen c...

Over 50 records of accidental catches, strandings and sightings dating from 1977 to 2013 reveal the regular presence of basking sharks (Cetorhinus maximus) (Condrichthyes: Lamniformes) in Apulia, south-east coast of Italy. Sightings/captures occur mostly from January to March and are concentrated in the Porto Cesareo/Gallipoli area in the Ionian Se...

Ten juveniles mako sharks (Isurus oxyrinchus) of 100-140 TL est. were caught between 2012 and 2014 with tremmel nets, lnlins and by anglers in the Central Thyrrenian sea (Italy). We also report the remarckable catch of five specimens, caught separately but within one month, in North-East Sardinina. Makos were once common in the Mediterranean sea bu...

People's perception (mental image) of sharks is created by the very first sequence (the opening theme) of any documentary or article. Our mind uses the first mental picture to anchor all the following information - social psychologists call this the primacy effect.
