Obesity is characterized by excessive accumulation of body fat, causing harm to health and involving biological, environmental, behavioral and genetic factors, with 1.9 billion people suffering from obesity worldwide, 25% of Brazilian adults and 23.8% of residents of Bahia. In children and adolescents, the prevalence of obesity has increased signif...
The early molecular identification of strains of Plasmodium vivax that have a worse prognosis is important to stratify the risk of complications and choice of conduct made by medical teams. Thus, the aim of the present study was to associate the presence of polymorphisms in the pvmdr-1 and pvcrt-o resistance genes of P. vivax in patients with bette...

Methods
This is a case–control study involving 104 children and adolescents. All...

INTRODUCTION:
Brazil’s western Amazon basin has the highest prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in the country. Coinfection with hepatitis D virus (HDV) is also endemic. To estimate the prevalence of HBV and HDV markers in a population inhabiting the northwest portion of Mato Grosso state in the western Amazon.
METHODS:
We performed a...
In recent years, the number of cases with severe Plasmodium vivax malaria has shown an increasing trend. It is, therefore, important to identify routine laboratory markers that best characterize the acute disease phase and can serve as a tool for clinical follow-up of patients. In a cohort study, we followed 87 patients with acute P. vivax monoinfe...

Vaccination against the hepatitis A virus (HAV) administered in two doses has been used effectively in universal child immunization programs in several countries. A single-dose vaccination was adopted in some low-income countries in an attempt to reduce costs without losing effectiveness. In 2014, single-dose universal vaccination was introduced in...
O objetivo do presente...
Although serum lipids are known to be altered in Plasmodium falciparum-induced malaria, little is known about such changes due to Plasmodium vivax infection. This cohort study assessed serum concentrations of triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in 164 patients in the acute phase of mal...
Leprosy reactions are acute inflammatory episodes that occur mainly in the multibacillary forms of the disease. The reactions are classified as type 1 (reverse reaction) or type 2 (erythema nodosum leprosum). Leprosy-associated oxidative stress has been widely demonstrated. Several recent studies have shown uric acid (UA) to have antioxidative effe...
Introduction:
Angiogenic factors such as angiopoietin 1 (Ang-1) and angiopoietin 2 (Ang-2) are biomarkers produced during activation and dysfunction of the vascular endothelium in several infectious diseases. The aim of this study was to determine the serum levels of Ang-1 and Ang-2 and to establish their relationship with the main indicators of w...
This open retrospective cohort study aimed to describe the incidence of recurrent Plasmodium vivax malaria and associated factors in Porto Velho, Rondônia State, Brazil, in 2009. Data were collected from the National Information System for Malaria Epidemiological Surveillance. There were 23,365 reported P. vivax malaria cases in 2009, 23% of which...
Background
Due to students’ initial inexperience, slides are frequently broken and blood smears are damaged in microscopy training, leading to the need for their constant replacement. To minimize this problem a method of preparing blood smears on transparent acetate sheets was developed with the goal of implementing appropriate and more readily ava...
The determination of parasitemia in the diagnosis of malaria is a routine practice because it assists the selection of treatment. The techniques used for estimating parasitemia are based on leukocyte counts or on a fixed volume of blood examined in a microscopic field. This study evaluated the concordance between parasitemia estimated by counting p...
Quantification of parasite density is an important component in the diagnosis of malaria infection. The accuracy of this estimation varies according to the method used. The aim of this study was to assess the agreement between the parasite density values obtained with the assumed value of 8,000 cells/μL and the automated WBC count. Moreover, the sa...
Introduction:
We evaluated the in vitro antimalarial activity of tigecycline as an alternative drug for the treatment of severe malaria.
Methods:
A chloroquine-sensitive Plasmodium falciparum reference strain, a chloroquine-resistant reference strain, and three clinical isolates were tested for in vitro susceptibility to tigecycline. A histidine...
This study described altered platelet indices in patients with acute malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax and determined whether these alterations are associated with warning signs of severe and complicated malaria.
A total of 186 patients attending the Malaria Clinic at the University Hospital from the Federal University of Mato Grosso, Brazil, betw...
Although several methods for estimation of densities of blood-stage malaria parasites by microscopy are in use, the most common is to count the number of asexual parasites seen relative to a given count of white blood cell (WBC) and then to multiply the parasite: WBC ratio by 8000, the assumed number of WBC per μL of blood. This assumed standard va...
