The widespread Neotropical genus Melocactus of approximately 42 currently recognized species, is most diverse in eastern Brazil and the Greater Antilles, especially Cuba. Species delimitation is notoriously problematic in the group, although this is due in part to a lack of detailed systematic studies, as well as a severely cluttered nomenclatural...

The Melocactus harlowii group comprises eight taxa (M. acunae subsp. acunae, M. acunae subsp. lagunaensis, M. borhidii, M. evae, M. harlowii, M. nagyi, M. perezassoi y M. radoczii) that have been widely treated as synonyms, however, this circumscription has not been supported in any morphological or molecular study. The main objective of this work...

Premise: The Caribbean islands are in the top five biodiversity hotspots on the planet; however, the biogeographic history of the seasonally dry tropical forest (SDTF) there is poorly studied. Consolea consists of nine species of dioecious, hummingbird-pollinated tree cacti endemic to the West Indies, which form a conspicuous element of the SDTF....

Four species of Consolea have been reported from the Cuban archipelago, each of which has been considered under threat of extinction. During the last three years various expeditions were carried out to try to update existing information about the conservation status of populations of the different species and their primary threats. Likewise, we rev...

The Mediterranean Brown Spider, Cyrtophora citricola (Forskål, 1775), is an invasive species in the Caribbean. It was reported for the first time in Cuba in 2003, in the eastern region. Since then the species has spread to the western extreme of the main island. However, its occurrence within protected areas has been poorly documented, as well as i...

ABSTRACT. Acoelorraphe wrightii H. Wendl is a palm native to Central America, the Caribbean and South Florida. In Cuba it is used in rural carpentry, primarily as fence posts, which could affect the dynamics of their populations. Because of this, in this work the dynamics of a population of A. wrightii and the potential impact of their use is chara...

By performing a mycological culture, we isolated a fungal strain from a mold patch in a book of great heritage value from the "Coronado" archives. Ribosomal DNA sequencing identified the strain as Aspergillus sclerotiorum. By qualitatively determining its cellulolytic, proteolytic and amylolytic and enzymatic activities, as well as the production o...

Question
I need to typify different plant communities by the total level of stress that they endures in its given habitats. I realize that the stress is the result of a very complex systems of factors and interactions. But what i need is a way to summarize all that in one index per community. Does any of you know a way to do it? If you would be so kind to facilitated it i will be very grateful. Thanks in advance
Question
