Meaningfulness is a profound aspect of our lives. So far, a concrete reflection of what meaning means in HCI is still rare. To understand users as humans, and thus, the humanity in being a user, we adopt Viktor Frankl’s understanding of users as meaning-seeking subjects. To make the concept of meaningfulness more graspable, we refer to what Frankl...
Focus groups (FGs) are a well-known and widely established qualitative research method. When conducting them in an online setting, we are faced with specific challenges such as a lack of non-verbal communication, less spontaneous interactions between participants, and issues in maintaining attention during longer online sessions. Yet, online settin...

Authorities often direct this recommendation to adults above 65 years old, a group particularly vulnerable to multiple risks. While this advice aims to save lives, when prolonged it also comes with various negative...

In the contemporary digital society, a way of contesting power and claim public accountability is through the use and spread of political memes, as a viral, multimodal (visual and text) genre of communication in the intersection between popular culture and politics. During the COVID-19 pandemic, just like in other contemporary issues, memes of succ...
This deliverable provides a synthesis and interpretation of the findings of previous tasks of work package (WP) 7, based on the theoretical framework established in WPs 2 and 3, i.e., Complex Systems Theory (Ostrom 2007). experiences during the pandemic.
Humour is a powerful cop...
The COVID- 19 pandemic has highlighted the key role that communication plays in preparing for and responding to a crisis. Across Europe, members of the general public have relied on the communications about what protective measures to take to curb the spread of the virus - hand washing, how to wear masks, physical distancing, when to isolate. Howev...
As a wicked problem, limiting the harm caused by misinformation requires merging multiple perspectives to the design of digital interventions, including an understanding of human behaviour and motivations in judging and promoting false information, as well as strategies to detect and stop its propagation without unduly infringing on rights or freed...
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and its accompanying “infodemic” lend new urgency to the study and practice of risk communication. Especially prior to the distribution of vaccines in early 2021, our primary means of responding to the pandemic has been to communicate accurate information about risks and protective actions to the public. It is particul...

Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) solutions have opened up a market of service provision for older adults and their caregivers. Insufficient public awareness and end-user involvement on AAL solutions have been influencing the market negatively. Advisory services on AAL solutions are a promising strategy to address those challenges but those are typical...

A suboptimal user-centred approach and limited user integration in the innovation process were advanced as influencing factors. This paper presents the results from a collabor...
With the third wave of HCI, awareness of considering the social context of individuals-in short, the situatedness of knowledge (SoK)-started to establish. Building on Donna Haraway's SoK and feminist HCI research, we argue that hierarchies are reflected in the supposed dualism user-researcher, and, consequently, have to be deconstructed to enable i...
Technological developments in the last 20 years have been instrumental in service provision by offering new means of interaction among stakeholders in virtual environments. However, in most service sectors, the consumer journey is growing in complexity, which calls for a multifaceted service logic. While a number of ICT companies have been expandin...
For the last 10 years, ageing well in the community has become a key concern of the European Union and its member states. Action plans as well as distinct programs such as the Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) Joint Programme are evidence of this engagement. While Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) solutions have conquered some market niches of service provisions to the ageing society, those services are often still provided in isolation and in a technocentric way. In this position paper, we build on the concepts of engagement ecosystems and engagement platforms to argue that an integration of physical and...
