The project aim was to know, understand and analyze the narratives and images of various generations of workers in the Chemical Complex of Estarreja, Portugal, on the factories’ work, on its complementarity with other external activities, namely agricultural ones, as well as on the environmental risks. The project mainly aimed at contributing to the reconstruction of local history and collective memory and identity.

The main goals of the Rural Matters project were to understand, through a multidisciplinary approach, based on the various theoretical and methodological skills of the team, the articulation between representations, consumptions and development strategies, in order to assess the Portuguese imaginary about the rural and its possible territorial effects. Therefore, the project aimed at producing and disseminating knowledge about the rural in Portugal, particularly concerning its (re)configurations and futures, and to contribute to the design and implementation of informed and more effective development strategies to meet the (diverse) rural new functions.
