In this paper, we present a new benchmark problem for testing both local and global optimization techniques. This problem is based on ideas from groundwater hydraulics and simple Euclidian geometry and has the following attractive features: (a) known values of the infinite global optima, which can be classified in a restricted number of sets, with...
The sustainable management of lakes and reservoirs requires the determination of their minimum environmental water level. Even though the assessment of minimum water level depends on a number of biotic and abiotic factors of the lake ecosystem, in many cases these factors are not entirely known and, furthermore, their evaluation is usually a challe...
The most important aspect of the agricultural systems is irrigation water management practices which require timely applied irrigation when the crop needs proper amount. There is a growing interest in deficit irrigation, an irrigation practice where the crop is exposed to a certain level of water stress either during particular phenological stages...
The design of a proper stream gauging network is a requirement in order to obtain accurate flow information, important for various purposes such as water resources management, flood forecasting and climate change impact assessment. Therefore, while it is necessary to minimise the number of stations in terms of feasibility and cost, the most suitabl...
In many real world applications of data envelopment analysis (DEA), sample surveys are employed to collect input and output data that may be imprecise or ambiguous. However, accurate input and output data are fundamentally indispensable in conventional DEA. This is due to the assumption underlying DEA, that all data assume specific numerical values...

The necessity of mitigating the consequences of energy dependence and water scarcity in remote areas, such as small islands puts forward the investigation of renewable energy sources. Especially in Aegean, the rich wind potential and natural topography favors the use of Hybrid Renewable Energy System (HRES). In this research work, a HRES in Fournoi...
In this paper, an optimisation model is developed to determine the optimal crop pattern and allocation of irrigation water under full and deficit irrigation conditions for adaptation to climate change. Climate change is considered as a global challenge with significant impacts on different aspects of social activity and on the natural environment....
In the current study an artificial neural network (ANN) is created for the investigation of the
rainfall – runoff relationship, in the water basin of Ilarion in Aliakmon river. For this reason,
six scenarios were created that were based on the ANN’s input parameters number and the
characteristics. The data that were used for the model calibratio...
In this paper, we introduce four new benchmark problems, which are based on rather common optimization issues of water resources management. These problems have the following features: a) adjustable difficulty, to cover a wide range of common engineering problems b) physical background familiar to scientists working on water resources management c)...
A combined regional drought analysis and forecast is elaborated and
applied to the Aison River Basin (Greece). The historical frequency,
duration and severity were estimated using the standardized
precipitation index (SPI) computed on variable time scales, while
short-term drought forecast was investigated by means of 3-D loglinear
models. A quasi-...
The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the hydrological components of the Aison River Basin in northern Greece. The orography of the area and the increasing irrigation needs require a specifically adapted hydrological model in order to address water management issues. With this aim in view, a parsimonious lumped simulation–optimization...
Precipitation has been widely considered as a starting point towards the apprehension of climate changes courses, constituting one of the most substantial components of the hydrologic cycle. The purpose of this work is to investigate the temporal variability of precipitation in order to contribute to a better interpretation of the hydrological stat...
In this paper, a benchmarking framework is presented for the performance assessment of irrigations systems. Firstly, a data envelopment analysis (DEA) is applied to measure the technical efficiency of irrigation systems. This method, based on linear programming, aims to determine a consistent efficiency ranking of irrigation systems in which known...
The inverse problem of groundwater flow is treated with an automatic method that can produce several alternative solutions at once. During their joint optimization, these solutions can exchange information in order to maintain some diversity and thus avoid a systematic premature convergence toward a single local minimum. Although genetic algorithms...
The boundary element method (BEM) can be used very efficiently, in solving groundwater flow problems. Genetic algorithms (GAs) constitute a very efficient optimization tool. Mediterranean Sea is considered to be a high risk area of water pollution. The sea is a major oil transportation route and up to one million tons of crude oil is discharged annually from accidental spills, illegal bunkering, cleaning practices, and inadequate port facilities. Furthermore, has a dense network of maritime transport with more than 450 ports, hosts more than 20.000 fish-farms and receives considerable amounts of pollutants from urban, industrial and agricultural activities.
Floating Wetlands (FW) are the latest development of constructed wetlands, as eco-friendly systems for pollution control. In marine and coastal environment, FW represent a challenging and promising solution since: (a) they are able to withstand sea water level fluctuations and waves, and (b) they have lower cost of operation and maintenance comparing to conventional water treatment methods.
Aim of ATLANTIS project is the operational development and evaluation of Mediterranean Floating Wetlands as an environmental friendly and eco-innovative solution for marine pollution control in Mediterranean, with focus on petroleum hydrocarbons.
Project implementation includes: (1) Screening of water pollution problems in Mediterranean ports and development of seasonal water quality maps in the test site, (2) Lab scale experiments for the study of marine pollution control mechanisms in FW and the development of a customized system for Mediterranean, (3) Establishment and operational evaluation of a full scale system in a Mediterranean Port.
The project ATLANTIS following a multi-scientific approach, is characterized by several innovative elements in the scientific fields of constructed wetlands and sustainable water resources management. These include the research on water quality improvement mechanisms of FW as affected by salinity, the treatment of petroleum hydrocarbons in marine environment with FW, the development of a system adapted in Mediterranean conditions, and the full scale evaluation of floating wetlands in operational environment.
