Microniphargus leruthi Schellenberg, 1934 (Amphipoda: Niphargidae) was first described based on samples collected in Belgium and placed in a monotypic genus within the family Niphargidae. However, some details of its morphology as well as recent phylogenetic studies suggest that Microniphargus may be more closely related to Pseudoniphargus (Amphipo...

Niphargus enslini Karaman, 1932 was collected only once in 1905 from the Falkensteiner Höhle (Baden-Württemberg, Germany). Two years after its description, the species was synonymized with Niphargus virei and not studied any more. During recent surveys on German niphargids, further samples collected in this cave did not yield N. enslini specimens,...

The common house mosquito, Culex pipiens s. l. is part of the morphologically hardly or non-distinguishable Culex pipiens complex. Upcoming molecular methods allowed us to identify members of mosquito populations that are characterized by differences in behavior, physiology, host and habitat preferences and thereof resulting in varying pathogen loa...

A set of 69 specimens from 19 groundwater species of the genera Niphargus , Niphargellus , Microniphargus and Crangonyx was genetically screened for microsporidian infections. Samples mostly originated from groundwater-dependent spring environments (71%), natural caves (9%) and artificial caverns/tunnels (13%). Amphipod hosts were identified by mor...

An unexpected new subgenus and species of Campodeidae (Diplura), Plusiocampa (Pentachaetocampa) inopinata subgen. et sp. nov., a troglobitic species found in Schallsinger Höhle in an isolated karstic region in southwestern Germany is described. The new taxon shows two unique characters for the genus Plusiocampa: five dorsal femoral macrosetae and t...

Catalogues of cave fauna from Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Germany (Swabian Alb, Franconian Alb, Westfalia, Hesse, Harz, Rhenish Palatinate and Saarland), and Luxembourg are available. Several activities deal with public relations, education, and training: the cave animal of the year, a camp for young cavers, the day nature, and the biospeleologi...

The Four-spotted Cave Ichneumon Wasp (Diphyus quadripunctorius) was elected Cave Animal of the Year 2017. This parasitic wasp is found in all of Europe and neighbouring regions. Especially the hibernating females are very conspicious, due to their characteristic yellow spots on the abdomen. The Four-spotted Cave Ichneumon Wasp depends obligatory on...

Abstract: During biospeological surveys of caves and mines in Luxembourg an unusual and probably troglobiontic new species of Sciaridae was detected. With the aid of DNA barcoding and morphological characters, it could be assigned to the genus Camptochaeta Hippa & Vilkamaa, 1994, with the troglophilic species Camptochaeta ofenkaulis (Lengersdorf, 1...
