Commercial fishing effort often collides with other uses and interests. Fisheries resources might be co-used by recreational fishers (anglers), support populations of nonhuman top-predators, and fishing space might be preserved for conservation purposes. This can affect how commercial fisheries operate. We studied how the spatial distribution of co...

Although insects have been approved as novel foods since 2021, European consumers’ willingness to purchase insect-based (IB) foods remains low. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of i) information treatments highlighting either the safety or environmental benefits of IB ingredients, and ii) protein-based nutrition claims in pro...

This paper connects the concept of involvement with recreational fishing and decision rules, namely regret-minimizing vs. utility-maximizing when making choices related to the activity. We hypothesized that people who are more involved show regret-minimizing rather than utility-maximizing behavior. In support, we found that behavioral commitment, m...

Understanding the attitudes of recreational anglers towards regulations and other stakeholders is important to inform fisheries management actions. We investigated the relationship of salient angler characteristics, specifically , specialization, catch orientation, place attachment and demographics, and the attitudes and beliefs regarding conservat...

Involving all interest groups, often called stakeholders, is increasingly recognized as a key part of sustainable natural resource management, promoting acceptability and compliance with management decisions. However, there is the difficulty of how to build trust, integrate diverse knowledge bases and account for varying objectives of different sta...

We synthesize a large body of literature involving peer-reviewed work, grey literature and novel data analyses about the small-scale northern pike (Esox lucius) fishery in lagoon ecosystems in the southern Baltic Sea. Based on our comprehensive review that synthesizes ecological as well as social, economic and governance-related literature we deriv...

Subsidies for temporary laying-up (TLU) are often introduced to support commercial fishers in crises. We studied the effect of a German TLU in response to quota cuts and the COVID-19 pandemic on fishers’ revenue frontiers and efficiency by stochastic frontier analysis, and on species composition by fixed-effects models using monthly landings declar...
Article
Pike (Esox lucius) populations across the central and southern Baltic Sea have undergone declines in recent decades. The underlying reasons are not fully understood but the loss of access to freshwater habitats in tributaries to brackish lagoons may be one important factor in some localities. Our objective was to synthesize evidence for the presenc...

The rarity of a good can increase its price. This so-called price feedback can motivate harvesters to exploit a fish stock even at low stock sizes, possibly contributing to collapse. To systematically examine the impact of price feedbacks on the bioeconomic equilibrium expected in a commercial fishery under regulated open access, we extend the stan...

Article
In the brackish lagoons located in coastal inshore areas around the German island of Rügen, pike Esox lucius is a highly sought after target species for recreational fishers. Yet, the pike stock is currently in decline, and conflicts with other user groups (specifically commercial fishers) have emerged. To inform future fisheries management, an imp...

Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) is one of the most important target species of marine recreational anglers in the western Baltic Sea, but the stock is collapsed, and regulations of both commercial and recreational fisheries have recently tightened. To analyze the preferences of anglers for harvest regulations and catch outcomes in the western Baltic re...

The contingent valuation method is often used to estimate the willingness to pay for changes in a public good (e.g., water quality, public transport or food safety). We show how the stated willingness to pay changes when respondents to a contingent valuation survey believe their response affects not only the provision of the public good offered, bu...

Little is known about whether brackish coastal ecosystems attract specific angler types that are characterized by site‐specific preferences and behaviors while targeting freshwater fishes living in a low‐salinity environment. Using the lagoon (“Bodden”) fisheries in northeastern Germany, we compared the human dimensions among anglers fishing in Bod...

Information on catch and effort of recreational angling in mixed-use fisheries (co-exploited by commercial and recreational fishers) is often scarce, preventing the application of data-rich stock assessments typically performed for industrialised commercial fisheries. This study shows how data-poor stock assessment methods developed for marine fish...
Article
We used time series, diet studies and angler surveys to examine the potential for conflict in brackish lagoon fisheries of the southern Baltic Sea in Germany, specifically focusing on interactions among commercial and recreational fisheries as well as fisheries and cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis). For the time period between 2011 and 2015...

Improving the wheat yield of countries along the Belt and Road (BR) plays a core role in ensuring global food security. However, little attention has been paid to the wheat yield variation and the determinants across these countries. This paper analyzes wheat yield convergence in countries along the BR using the club-convergence test. The empirical...

Purpose This paper reviews the current literature on theoretical and methodological issues in discrete choice experiments, which have been widely used in non-market value analysis, such as elicitation of residents' attitudes toward recreation or biodiversity conservation of forests. Design/methodology/approach We review the literature, and attribu...

As central policies for biodiversity conservation in agricultural landscapes in the European Union (EU), the Habitats Directive and Agri-environmental programmes (AEP) have largely failed to halt biodiversity loss. In response, the German federal state of Saxony combined the instrument of management plans with AEPs to support the implementation of...

Designation of Natura 2000 areas is a major cornerstone in the EU's biodiversity policy. However, it has triggered resistance from land users due to increased regulations on land use and related value change. This study first develops a theoretical model for rent change due to land regulation, and then empirically investigates whether farmland rent...

Fragmentation and destruction of ecosystems due to highways are key threats to habitat quality and biodiversity. In this article, we develop a theoretical framework and use a dynamic spatial panel data model to estimate how Austrian highway construction after 1968 has impacted the populations of roe deer, red deer and wild boar. The results indicat...

In order to control air pollution in Beijing, China has introduced a number of policy measures. However, the policy costs have never been well evaluated from the perspective of the residents. We conducted a survey of 633 Beijing residents with a choice experimental setting, and evaluate the current air pollution control policies. The main findings...

Cities increasingly face the necessity to choose among possible policy measures to counter urban heat and then to justify them. The contingent valuation method (CVM) is a frequently applied approach to estimate the monetary value of environmental policy measures. The authors scrutinized the appropriateness of the CVM to estimate the value of trees...
Article
Air pollution is one of the top environmental concerns in China. On days with severe air pollution, people (both consumers and producers) often reduce outdoor economic activities in order to avoid possible health damages. This impacts the market trade of fresh food products, at least in a short run. This empirical study sheds light on the impact of...

Over the past two decades, mountain biking has emerged as an increasingly popular recreational activity. However, at least in Austria official trails do not necessarily match the preferences of bikers and therefore they often ride on unofficial trails or on trails where biking is not allowed. This behavior can result in conflicts with other trail u...

There is an increasing demand for feed as the industrialization of hog production in China. Land scarcity limits China's ability to continue increasing its hog production without feed imports, particularly soybean, and the feed markets are increasingly integrated into the global market. This study performs an analysis of price transmission between...
