The manufacturing industry is very important for the North Sea Region (NSR) economy and remains a driver for growth. The focus of the GrowIn 4.0 project will be the common challenges manufacturing SMEs throughout the NSR face today, and the opportunities they bring. Many of these SMEs are moving toward the fourth industrial revolution - Industry 4.0 - which is regarded as the industry of tomorrow. If the manufacturing industry in the NSR is to remain competitive, we need to capture the potential for productivity and growth that Industry 4.0 appears to offer. There is a profound need for an experience based and smart gathering of efficient methods, tools and knowledge to guide SMEs in their transformation towards Industry 4.0. GrowIn 4.0 aims to build strong competences and tools in the participating regions for the benefit of manufacturing SMEs. The approach is to establish a strong partnership which pools knowledge on the manufacturing industry and Industry 4.0. Main challenges and solutions in regards of implementing Industry 4.0 will be investigated. The resulting collections of new or improved methods and tools - developed in interaction with SMEs - will be universal within different areas of the NSR.

The objective formulated in Germanys Federal Government's high-tech strategy for the preservation and expansion of a competitive and employment-intensive economy is described in the project Industrie 4.0. It provides new concepts for flexible production. Starting with the planning tasks, the commercial order processing up to the production-technical execution, tasks can be negotiated mechanically and cooperatively. This requires flexible communication between a wide variety of tools - from office-based tools in the ERP environment to real-time communication of components in the shop floor. Immanent for Industry 4.0 is the ability of the participants to react dynamically to requirements at all levels and to independently find suitable communication partners. Regarding the communication systems, different requirements, e.g. safety or real-time requirements, have to be fulfilled. For that, it does not have to treat proprietary communication systems in the field area separately. The research project MONAT wants to contribute to gaining confidence in the Software Defined Network technology for the establishment of virtual networks at the end customer. This is only possible if it is shown that in addition to the required quality characteristics of the connection, the implementation of security requirements without additional overhead is possible. In addition, MONAT will investigate the consistency of the developed configuration solutions for real-time communication modules in the industrial automation sector, including the Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) approach on the one hand and the use of the same configuration solutions in the pure ICT area and implement them as a demonstrators.
