Using all data sources available, we collected 2,189 nominal scientific names that have been applied to the fishes from Gabon. Data from the literature and online database indicate that 1,062 valid species of fishes live in Gabonese waters, with 288 of these strictly restricted to freshwaters, 592 strictly restricted to marine environments and 182...

The equilibrium of inland hydrosystems is presently a cause for concern, with species extinction rates there estimated to be 5 times higher than for terrestrial fauna in the 21st century. Urgent measures must be taken to conserve these ecosystems particularly with regard to fishes, which represent an especially rich and diverse evolutionary heritag...

The chromosomal diversity within six species of Mormyridae belonging to six different genera (Gnathonemus petersii, Marcusenius moorii, Ivindomyrus obdenboschi, Brienomyrus sp., Stomatorhinus walkeri and Petrocephalus microphthalmus) is investigated for the first time. These species have a conserved diploid chromosome number of 2n = 50 (except G. p...

To explain the spatial variability of fish taxa at a large scale, two alternative proposals are usually evoked. In recent years, the debate has centred on the relative roles of present and historical processes in shaping biodiversity patterns. In Africa, attempts to understand the processes that determine the large scale distribution of fishes and...

In this article, I analysed the biogeographical distribution and the historical origin of freshwater fish of the Ethiopian Rift Valley (ERV) region which is not a homogeneous area. The Ethiopian region, including Eritrea and part of Somalia, includes 13 basins as geographical units. A comparison was carried out with four Near East geographical unit...

The history of ichthyology in Africa is reviewed. From the time of the Ancient Egyptians to the present, more than 3200 species have been discovered, drawn and described. Michel Adanson initiated the first material collections during the 18th century. During the 19th century, the work of travelling scientists (Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, Andrew...

The precise number of extant fish species remains to be determined. About 28,900 species were listed in FishBase in 2005, but some experts feel that the final total may be considerably higher. Freshwater fishes comprise until now almost 13,000 species (and 2,513 genera) (including only freshwater and strictly peripheral species), or about 15,000 if...

The phylogenetic relationships within the piranhas were assessed using mitochondrial sequences with the aim of testing several hypotheses proposed to explain the origin of Neotropical diversity (palaeogeography, hydrogeology and museum hypotheses). Sequences of the ribosomal 16S gene (510 bp) and control region (980 bp) were obtained from 15 locali...

Abstract – We examined patterns in fish species assemblages structure and function along environmental gradients in rivers of Gabon. Species presence–absence data from 52 sites were first analysed by canonical correspondence analysis. Results showed that the position of sites along the upstream–downstream gradient, together with elevation and water...

The African family Alestidae (Ostariophysii: Characiformes) includes today 13 genera, among which seven are monospecific. The size range observed in the family greatly varies with species ranging from 21 mm up to 130 cm for more than 50 kg. Among the Alestidae, three tribes were previously identified: the Alestini, the Hydrocinini and the Petersiin...

Synchronous fluctuations of the abundance of several populations at a regional scale can be a sign of a climatic effect on their dynamics (Moran effect). However, the interpretation of spatial synchrony is often complicated by the interaction between climatic disturbances and migrations between the studied populations. We addressed this question by...

Onchocerciasis is a widespread disease in intertropical Africa, which, ultimately, causes irreversible blindness. The disease is transmitted by a small blackfly, Simulium damnosum (Diptera), which has aquatic larval and pupal stages. The breeding sites of the blackflies are riffles. These river reaches are the targets of the control campaign of the...

In the tropics, there is very little information on fish reproduction in intermittent streams and most of the studies are from the neotropic regions. In temporary rivers, environmental conditions are sharply contrasted and the variation amplitude of hydrological and physicochemical characteristics is high. In the Baoulé River (Mali), during the pea...

Taxonomy is the science of naming and describing organisms. It is a highly formalized science whose rules are established and revised regularly by an International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature created in 1895. The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature contains all the rules for designating animal species which are the same for all...

Long-term variability of some community parameters was studied in 18 riverine fish assemblages located in France and West Africa. Salient results are : (1) Coefficient of variation (CV) of species richness, CV of total abundance and average CV of population abundance for assemblage members increased with study time span. (2) Within GROSSMAN et al....
