Anaphoric pronoun resolution in spoken language has been shown to be influenced by the first mention bias. While this bias has been well investigated in spoken languages, less is known about a similar bias in sign languages. In sign languages, pronominal pointing signs ( index ) are directed towards referential locations in the signing space typica...
Article
A number of studies provide evidence for a phonological priming effect in the recognition of single signs based on phonological parameters and that the specific phonological parameters modulated in the priming effect can influence the robustness of this effect. This eye tracking study on German Sign Language examined phonological priming effects at...

Studies on global and local discourse have shown that sign languages indeed allow for occurrence of referentially unanchored pronominal index (ıx) signs referring to non-present antecedents to appear in ambiguous contexts. In local contexts, resolving the reference of these expressions has been suggested to either depend on a modality-specific anap...

While the first mention bias has been well investigated in spoken languages, little is known about the presence of a similar bias in sign languages. In sign languages, pronominal pointing signs are directed towards referential locations in the ipsilateral and contralateral area of the signing space usually associated with referents in previous cont...

Sign languages use the horizontal plane to refer to discourse referents introduced at refer-ential locations. However, the question remains whether the assignment of discourse refer-ents follows a particular default pattern as recently proposed such that two new discourse referents are respectively assigned to the right (ipsilateral) and left (cont...

This paper aims to show to what degree relativization strategies in Turkish Sign Language (TİD) are influenced by discourse functions of relative clauses, extending Kubus’ study (Kubus, 2016). In his study, Kubus describes various relativization strategies (i.e. internally headed, externally headed and free relatives) and identifies non-manual (i.e...

This paper focuses on the properties of command constructions in Turkish Sign Language (TİD). The nature and function of manual signs and nonmanual markers in command constructions in TİD are investigated to determine their prosodic, morphological, morphophonological, and syntactic properties. We show that TİD does not utilize any of the properties...
Thesis
This study investigates the distribution of empty onsets [Ox-O] in careful and casual speech of Turkish in the framework of (Standard) Government Phonology (GP). It is proposed that the occurrence of a certain type of an empty onset determined by the speech rate/style allows for a number of optional phonological processes such as liaison, vowel coa...
