Introduction
I am a mixed-methods anthropologist working in global populations. I examine cultural and biological drivers and population health consequences of early life adversity and social inequalities on child and adolescent linear growth/body size, pubertal development, mental health, and wellbeing. I use frameworks and methods from medical anthropology, evolutionary biology, qualitative health research, and data science with specialties in secondary data analysis, team science, and primary fieldwork.

Article
Armed conflict and forced migration (ACFM) represent a set of extreme environments that are increasingly common for children and adolescents to experience. Adolescence may constitute a sensitive period (puberty and psychoneurological maturation) through which ACFM adversity leaves a lasting mark. Adolescence has become a focal point for analysis an...

Adolescence is an expansive, dynamic period in the life course covering a broad age range (ages 10-24) and a cascade of biological and cultural changes. However, biocultural approaches to adolescence have been less well developed within existing research compared to child and adult counterparts. In this article, we advance a roadmap to revisit rece...
Article
Pubertal research has primarily focused on hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis (HPG) regulation of puberty, though the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis (HPA) is increasingly considered critical. Heightened HPA function proxied by increasing cortisol levels may play a role in accelerated pubertal timing. However, the extent to which cortisol vari...

Chapter

In this chapter, we have explored sources of variation in functional health and frailty, two critical components of older adults’ quality of life among older adults, across Vietnam Health and Aging Study (VHAS) participants. Functional health refers to the ability to perform basic physical movements, like walking. Disability refers to the ability t...

This repository contains R code and instructions to automatically collate and calculate quality control indices across multiple output files generated from BioTek microplate readers with Gen5 software. This is applicable for researchers conducting laboratory assays with this specific equipment and software. The worked example was developed for outp...

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and gonadal (HPG) axes partially regulate the timing of child-to-adult phenotypic transitions. 'Hormonal Coupling' describes relationships between 2+ hormones (e.g., cortisol, testosterone), leveraged to understand why HPA-HPG crosstalk is expected in adolescence. Evolutionary theorists suggest the HPA and H...

Childhood psychosocial stressors have been proposed to favor fast life history strategies promoting earlier puberty in females. However, studies demonstrating this association often do not elucidate causal mechanisms, nor account for greater childhood energetic availability—also known to promote rapid growth and earlier puberty. To assess the exten...

Objective People living in war may experience deteriorating health via weathering (wear and tear) from long-term exposures to psychosocial and environmental stressors. Weathering embodied in somatic health complaints may illuminate the effects of war on health. Methods We investigate whether wartime stress exposures occurring during adolescence an...

Background: Arab Americans' experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic have been largely undocumented. Disparities in vaccine hesitancy between non-Hispanic Whites and minoritized groups have been observed, warranting exploration into the prevalence of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among Arab Americans. Methods: Data from the Survey of Arab Health in...

Philanthropic giving is a classic example of prosociality. Important for funding charitable and not-for-profit organizations, research on philanthropic giving is particularly relevant as competition for donors has increased in recent years. This chapter investigates the influence of social cues on philanthropic solicitation using one-shot anonymous...
