Geospatial information about the Brazilian agriculture supports decisions and public policies at different levels and scales. The System for Observation and Monitoring of Agriculture in Brazil (SOMABRASIL) organizes and integrates census data and information generated from satellite images and other sources into a single database for the whole country, favoring the characterization and analysis of agricultural data and the conservation of natural resources. Available on the Internet, the system includes WebGIS databases of natural resources and agriculture, with information on production and the IBGE Agricultural Census, data generated by IBAMA and Inpe programs, mappings performed by Embrapa and other organizations, in addition to information about topography, hydrography, logistics, protected areas and agricultural potential. The interface proposed by Embrapa aims at enabling the user’s interaction with databases through basic and advanced queries to generate information that is useful for land zonings, monitoring of the spatial dynamics of agriculture, research priorities, and public policy. The adoption of international regulations and standards favors the interoperability of content and services and offers a general and integrated view of the agricultural and livestock potential from a municipal to a national scale. This project developed and implemented new query methods, models and simulations of geospatial data, including technology transfer actions through data interoperability and meeting specific demands from users or group of users. During the Large Scale Experiment of Biosphere and Atmosphere in Amazonia (LBA), science advancements were achievedin understanding the functioning of Amazonian ecosystems, their interactions with the global climate and human activities affecting the region. Forest degradation is an important factor and strongly related to the loss of biomass and carbon emissions. However, there are still many knowledge gaps about forest degradation and its relationship with selective logging, deforestation, landscape fragmentation and the occurrence of understory fires. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the land use trajectories and forest degradation processes by reconstructing the degradation history in three municipalities using temporal series of orbital and suborbital optical imagery. Airborne LiDAR surveys and field data collection, performed in different periods, will allow to estimate changes in biomass. All data will be calibrated from forest inventories. Of interdisciplinary character, this project pursues an integrated vision for the process of forest degradation and its interaction with human factors, from a multitemporal and multiscalar perspective of the landscape. This project is funded by The Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), focused on LBA.
