It is common practice to apply the widely accepted traditional five phases of the project management life cycle, namely (i) initiation, (ii) planning, (iii) execution, (iv) monitor and control, (v) closure, to community development projects (Donato, 2021; Eby, 2018). Though, some authors reduced the phases to four by combining phases four and five...

Introduction Our decisions are only as good as the information on which it is based. Therefore, the challenge for any community development practitioner, local authority, or charity organisation is to identify the "correct" development project(s) that would truly resonate with the people in the target community. 1. GENERAL PROBLEMS WITH DESIGNING A QUESTIONNAIRE • How do I start with a research project? • How do I know whether I have asked sufficient questions? • How do I know whether my questionnaire will be on target? • Where does my study of available literature fit in? Where does my hypothesis fit in? • How do I start noting the results? When planning...

Community development lacks a proper theory. This paper postulates that the reason for this intolerable state being that community development has been hijacked by charity organizations and politicians with ‘do good’ intentions, simply because it lacks proper scientific theory that offers some element of prediction in the outcome. Current developme...

While the world waits in anticipation for a vaccine against the Covid-19 virus, controlling the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic is all about managing the movement of people. The lockdown principle introduced in many countries aims to keep people in their respective communities, which also means the closure of many formal to the informal local econo...

Community development is probably one of the most used and abused words in the vocabulary of politicians, development consultants and day-today talk among those involved in shaping the future in under developed and developing countries. Success stories are few and there is simply little or no guarantee that the outcome of a community development pr...

Informal caregivers play an important role in the well-being of dependent members in a household. Yet, literature on female caregiver burden in low-income and middle-income countries is scanty. This paper explores the faultlines in community development thinking. It argues that most community development projects are still merely social engineering projects that are deemed to fail. The article uses the complexity theoretical paradigm to postulate that the Basic Needs community development theory avoids the underlying popular social engine...

Is there really a positive relation between safety legislation and occupational health? Most authors agree with safety being a managerial issue that should be mainstreamed into the management of a company. Though this statement could not be faulted, it is argued that continuously refined and often so complex legislation designed to cover every poss...

In this paper the issue of unintended consequences is addressed from the tradition of a scientific research perspective within the postmodern paradigm and Gleick's (1988) chaos theory point of departure, and take the view that based upon scientific logic, there cannot be such a thing as an unintended consequence. The paper suggests that Weber's ass...

If development, and specifically development in the health sector, had followed the principles of the typical input-output model for rendering health services to the poor, it would have been easy. Still, the few success stories in health service delivery to under and developing coun-tries are few and they seldom give clear blueprints of best practi...

The presentation highlights some historical moments in the history of the liberation of South Africa and the role of the youth therein. In doing community needs analyses with the Priority Index (P-Index) technique in more than 56 communities over the past 13 years, housing seldom showed the highest priority in the needs of the res...
