Chapter
Nature-based solutions (NbS) in cities are actions that utilize ecosystem processes of green-blue infrastructure to safeguard or enhance the delivery of ecosystem services and contribute to address urban challenges. The identification of spatial opportunities for NbS can support the development of concrete options of NbS planning and implementation...
Chapter
The aim of this chapter is to present and test a performance-based planning approach based on the information produced by ecosystem services (ES) mapping and assessment at the urban scale. The city of Trento in Italy is used as a case study. The planning approach allows to estimate the impacts of proposed urban transformations and to define for the...

Article
Full-text available
This article presents teaching and learning material from three strategically designed ReNature Horizon 2020 project training activities. A total of twelve presentations covering different aspects of NbS implementation are presented with this article. Additionally, this article also includes materials produced by learners, throughout their work wit...
Article
This work identifies the urban impacts of two FIFA World Cups organised before the consolidation of the urban entrepreneurialism model, Spain 1982 and Italy 1990, and compares them with those of more recent sports mega-events. Main differences mostly concern the impacts related to the material transformation of hosting cities, with more recent even...

Nature based solutions (NbS) have the potential to build climate resilience and tackle key societal challenges while also providing multiple co-benefits to biodiversity and human well-being. The demand for nature-based innovation is strongly felt in Malta – a small island state, with the highest population density in the European Union. Learning an...
Article
Full-text available
The integration of ecosystem service (ES) knowledge into decision-making processes is increasingly endorsed by various policies and initiatives, with spatial planning targeted as one of the most relevant fields. Learning and feeding back from existing experiences is therefore a fundamental step to ensure appropriate and useful support by ES science...

Nature-based solutions (NBS) is a term often used to refer to adequate green infrastructure that provides multiple benefits to society whilst addressing societal challenges. They are defined as actions to protect, sustainably manage and restore natural or modified ecosystems that address societal challenges effectively and adaptively, simultaneousl...
Conference Paper
Full-text available
Nature-based solutions (NBS) are broadly defined as the use of solutions based on nature and ecological functions to address societal challenges, such as climate change adaptation and mitigation, population health, food security, and natural disasters, through the delivery of multiple ecosystem services (ES). This paper aims to outline some of the...
Article
Growing non-food crops in marginal lands has been proposed as a solution to avoid land competition with food production. Mapping marginal agricultural lands is therefore fundamental for the sustainable development of rural landscapes. This study proposes a method based on remote sensing data to identify marginal agricultural lands for the productio...

Circular economy and urban metabolism concepts have recently received great attention both in the political and academic arenas, starting a roll-over process of the “take, make, and dispose” dominant economic model that is leading to an ongoing increase of resource consumption and waste generation. However, there is a relative lack of guidelines fo...

Correct measurements of soil sealing can only be achieved through the accurate study of the ground based on spatial geographic data. A systematic and institutional framework for monitoring this phenomenon still lacks in Italy. An exception is represented by the recent scientific initiative of ISPRA, realized employing existing national data sources...

Project
This research aims at exploring the challenges associated to the development of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in urban areas, and to their inclusion in urban planning. Particularly, the research focuses on (some of) the following topics: • Methods for mapping and assessing ecosystem services, and disservices, associated to NBS in urban environments (e.g, by comparing existing modeling tools or developing new ones); • Inclusion of NBS in urban planning and design, policy formulation and other decision-making processes; • Scalability of NBS across scales relevant for cities; • Flexibility of NBS to fit different environmental and climatic conditions, as well as planning and governance mechanisms.
