A mathematical model for weight loss, or gain, is developed that shows a plateau effect not explained by metabolic adaptation. This result is new, easily applicable and predictive of future changes in body weight. Data and programs are downloadable.
A series of combined epidemic and public health campaign models is developed that examines the effects of public health campaigns on the long-term spread of AIDS. This series of models can be useful in the different equations classroom to demonstrate how models of increasing complexity are built and analyzed, interpreted, and further modified. It i...
Philosophical foundations of mathematical modelling
A model for the spread of a herpes-type infection in either human or animal populations is developed and analyzed qualitatively. Incorporated in the model is a harvesting parameter for the case of animal populations. This parameter is set to zero for human populations.
A combined epidemic-demographic model is developed which models the spread of an infectious disease throughout a population of constant size. The model allows for births, deaths, temporary or permanent immunity, and immunization. The relationship of this model to previously studied epidemic and demographic models is illustrated. An advantage of thi...
