Managing Digital Transformation (DT) has become a top priority for executives as technological advancements and increasing decision-making complexity accelerate challenges in navigating through DT. Acknowledging that cognition (e.g., in the form of thoughts, beliefs, and emotions), is fundamentally relevant during organizational transformation proc...
Conference Paper
To develop and implement digital innovations many incumbent companies have set up digital innovation units (DIUs) primarily as part of their digital transformation journey. Despite a steadily growing body of knowledge, however, extant literature is in a nascent stage to explain the unfolding of digital innovations in such units. Drawing on empirica...

Industry 4.0 is transforming how businesses innovate and, as a result, companies are spearheading the movement towards ‘Digital Transformation’. While some scholars advocate the use of design thinking to identify new innovative behaviours, cognition experts emphasise the importance of top managers in supporting employees to develop these behaviours...

These days design thinking is no longer a “new approach”. Among practitioners, as well as academics, interest in the topic has gathered pace over the last two decades. However, opinions are divided over the longevity of the phenomenon: whether design thinking is merely “old wine in new bottles,” a passing trend, or still evolving as it is being spr...

To equip students with the practical capability to innovate, academic institutions are promoting industry collaboration projects, where students use creative approaches, such as, design thinking (DT), to solve complex business challenges. In creative team work, the ability to reflect upon and improve team dynamics is vital. However, research on the...

Although the nexus of Design Thinking (DT) and corporate entrepreneurship being heralded as promising, the concrete compositional architecture of how DT manifests in practice has received limited scholarly attention. Drawing on the argument that DT can facilitate intrapreneurial innovation by enabling effective cognition, we developed a multidimens...

Mobile health, or mHealth, solutions offer great potential in the area of self-monitoring of chronic conditions, where most of the day-to-day management of the condition is done at home by the patient or their caregivers. Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep condition caused by an orexin deficiency in the brain resulting in its inability to regulate sleep...

Scholars have suggested that design thinking (DT) should form an integral part of the new product development (NPD) process. However, the contribution of DT to NPD over the past years is yet to be synthesized. In this article, we develop a conceptual framework categorizing how DT contributes to NPD, and present a map to visualize how research in th...

Digital transformation is establishing itself as a strategic imperative for firms to stay competitive in a digitally disrupted and constantly changing business world. Prior research indicates the connection between a firm’s responsiveness to external changes - its dynamic capabilities - and its digital maturity, both enhancing its competitive advan...

When integrated within an organization, Design Thinking (DT) can be the foundation of competitive advantage. However, systematic assessments of how DT is diffused in practice have received limited scholarly attention. In this paper, we present and apply a visual model developed to assess, describe, analyze and plan the roles DT can assume within or...

Abstract. Due to a rapidly changing business environment, companies feel under constant pressure to innovate. In response to this challenge, and to accelerate their digital innovation endeavours, many incumbent firms set up Digital Innovation Units. To assess the effectiveness of these units, scholars and practitioners have called for the need to d...
Conference Paper

Digital Innovation Units (DIUs) have become an important vehicle for digital innovation and the exploration of new ventures, often applying Design Thinking (DT). However, scholars lack knowledge about how to measure these activities from the perspective of both DIUs and DT. To understand the key challenges involved, an exploratory qualitative resea...
Conference Paper
Designing and implementing successful mobile health (mHealth) applications is always challenging, but even more so in countries and communities in rural areas where the target population have access to limited resources. While some mHealth initiatives have shown success and potential in Kenya, still too many fail. One of the reasons for failure is...

Design Thinking has become an important and widely accepted innovation approach in many companies worldwide. However, it is mostly used in small innovation or research projects, or is outsourced to innovation labs or design agencies. Furthermore, there is little published data on how to leverage Design Thinking for complex applications. Multiple, c...
Conference Paper
As more and more organizations are reaching the limits of their internal innovation performance, they are increasingly forced to seek external innovation opportunities through inter-organizational collaboration forms, such as creative projects. These collaborations require both efficient and effective forms of communication since a common understan...
Conference Paper
Design Thinking (DT) has gained attention as a problem-solving method that drives innovation. However, the implementation and application of DT in firms seems challenging. While we know that especially non-designers have problems in adopting DT, we don't know why. Addressing this gap, this study investigates the learning experience of non-designers...

Software innovation is a core differential factor for organizational survival to deliver faster, better, and more cost-effective software solutions. Accordingly, different approaches to innovations have been developed, e.g. Design Thinking from the field of design, Lean Startup from the field of entrepreneurship, and agile development approaches fr...

The study of sociomateriality in Information Systems (IS) research has been increasing its impact and interest. Primarily focusing on how the material and the social are intertwined and its implication for organizations, IS research on sociomateriality does not account for role of the individual and the "self". Enactive approaches to cognition are...

Differences in knowledge backgrounds hinder the work of cross-functional teams by making knowledge integration more difficult, especially when the teams are confronted with novelties in new product development (NDP) projects. Boundary objects are attributed to a mediating capability. While design artifacts are often used to facilitate communication...

Recent evidence suggests that design thinking can contribute to agile software development by increasing attention towards user needs as well as collaboration in interdisciplinary teams. However, there is a lack of understanding and support on how to facilitate the integration of design thinking activities into the daily work of agile development t...
Conference Paper
This industry case study explores where and how Design Thinking supports software development teams in their endeavour to create innovative software solutions. Design Thinking has found its way into software companies ranging from startups to SMEs and multinationals. It is mostly seen as a human centered innovation approach or a way to elicit requi...

Proficiency in design thinking (DT) can contribute to the success of many companies. Successful implementation of DT can be achieved by identifying its Critical Success Factors (CSFs). Critical success factors are items or actions that should be present in a particular project or situation in order to be successful. However, to date, there has not...
Chapter
The debate on how to integrate Design Thinking and Lean Startup into the agile process has been addressed in the literature over the past few years. Researchers argue that Design Thinking can contribute to software development by offering support on how to understand user needs in order to derive solution and product options, whereas Lean Startup h...
