Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) offers many advantages, including high crop productivity and the ability to produce all year-round. The control of the indoor environment-temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide concentration (CO 2), lighting intensity (spectrum, and duration)-leads to higher yield than agriculture in fields. However, these ad...

Energy storage system (ESS) plays a key role in peak load shaving to minimize power consumption of buildings in peak hours. This paper proposes a novel energy management unit (EMU) to define an optimal operation schedule of ESSs by employing metaheuristic and mathematical optimization approaches. The proposed EMU uses a thermal energy storage syste...

In a building-integrated agriculture (BIA) space, peak loads must be estimated to size HVAC equipment in order to maintain indoor air conditions that enhance crop growth. However, the estimation of the rates of heat gain/loss induced by the crops and their impact on heating and cooling loads have only been sparsely addressed. The present study prop...

In this paper, the TRNSYS simulation results of a building integrated agricultural space (BIAs), where a lettuce model estimated the latent and sensible heat transfers between the plants and the environment, were presented. The energy performance of two heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems was assessed for different cultivated d...

The calibration of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) sub-systems provides additional information, such as sub-systems performance during operation, and circumvents compensation errors often reported in the literature for the calibration of building energy use. However, only limited details are provided in the literature to proceed wi...

The use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for building energy modeling (BEM) is a recent evolution in design practice. The success of BIM-BEM execution relies on considering two important aspects: process and technology. In this paper, a review of the literature using a systematic approach is proposed to highlight that these two aspects are ra...

The use of building information modeling (BIM) to create a building energy model (BEM) compared with traditional simulation practices offers significant timesaving potentials by minimizing efficiency issues, legal disputes, added costs, and delays. The BIM-BEM strategy avoids remodeling the building to create the BEM by exchanging architectural inf...

For residential customers living in a cold climate, energy savings during the heating season are often achieved through thermostat setbacks. In order to gain insight into this phenomenon, the Laboratoire des Technologies de l’Énergie (LTE) of Hydro-Québec has used its unique twin-houses test bench that consists of two all-electric single-family hou...

The construction of passive solar greenhouses on urban rooftop is gaining popularity in Canada. This type of greenhouse provides many energetic and economic advantages. However, their conception remains atypical. Heating and ventilation systems generally recommended for standard greenhouses are often inadequate for this kind of specific application...

Energy simulation software is a key enabler in building design to optimise energy efficiency, reduce operating costs, comply with code requirements and qualify for incentive programs. However, numerous software are available and it could be difficult to choose the most suitable one. This paper presents a comparative study of three very popular tool...

Building energy prediction is a key factor to assess the energy performance of commercial buildings, identify operation issues and propose better operating strategies based on the forecast information. Different models have been used to forecast energy demand in buildings, including whole building energy simulation, regression analysis, and black-b...

This paper, which is an extension of previous studies, presents the modeling of an existing central cooling plant by using the EnergyPlus program. The previously identified coefficients of the chiller model and additional performance values/curves obtained using measured data are used to develop and calibrate the model. Differences in performance v...
Article
Several approaches for model calibration are used by consultants and researchers. For buildings with large mechanical cooling plants, the measurement of relevant parameters, the identification of performance values/curves, and their use in the model calibration should receive more attention, especially when the model is intended for ongoing commiss...
Article
This paper proposes two different types of benchmark models for the comparison of energy performance of water-cooled electric chillers: correlation-based models and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models. Different techniques are proposed to establish the models and are evaluated with data collected from two chillers installed in an existing centra...

This paper proposes an approach to identify the coefficients of the chiller model used by the EnergyPlus program. Data collected every 15 minutes from an existing cooling plant are used to evaluate the approach. The results demonstrate that 28-days of data for the first chiller and 7-days of data for the second chiller, collected at the beginning o...

Assessing the energy performance of multi-usage buildings requires the development of new design approaches and operating strategies. As new building usages emerge, there is a need to study the design requirements and possible interactions with a variety of other building spaces. For instance, there is a rising interest to develop solutions to integrate agricultural spaces to buildings, either to improve the indoor environment or to provide locally grown food. In both cases, the complex interaction of plants with the building indoor environment is often neglected, but is important and influences the design and operation of buildings. To ensure proper integration of agricultural spaces to buildings the following objectives are proposed: (1) to model plants to estimate their impact on the building indoor environment, (2) to develop a methodology to size their heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, and (3) to evaluate the possible synergies of the agricultural spaces with the other building spaces (loads and HVAC systems).
Project
The goal of this study is to quantify and compare different measure of energy conservation for a greenhouse in Montreal, Qc. To do so, a calibration of an energetic model is made using EnergyPlus and ASHRAE 14-2002.
