The universality of Schwartz's Theory of Basic Human Values relies on the comprehensiveness of his value types, i.e., they are exhaustive of all human values, no matter where they are found. Schwartz built on Rokeach's (1973) theory of human values, however, by 1994 Schwartz had developed a theory of values that superseded Rokeach's 36 values with...

Schwartz's Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ) 2-statement approach might cause measurement error. Respondents might be influenced by different themes contained in the two statements in each of the 21 items in the PVQ and their answers might not be comparable. Our research question is: Do the responses to the 21 items in Schwartz's Portrait Values...

Relevance & Research Question: The coronavirus crisis is accompanied by an immense corona media hype. Unfortunately, conflicting information also circulated from people who were actually managing the crisis (e.g. regarding a curfew, positive benefit of face masks). This might have created insecurity about the credibility of information around the p...

Numerous empirical studies based on Schwartz’s famous Theory of Basic Values also use his Portrait Values Questionnaire to collect data. Many of these follow Schwartz by using multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) and goodness-of-fit (GoF) tests to ascertain the extent to which their empirical results reproduce his two-dimensional model and visually repr...

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of external factors on the Facebook dialogue. As both weather and point in time substantially. Participation in the labour market forms an essential basis for a self-determined and self-supporting life, especially for people with experience of flight, in line with Upper Austrian integration policy. However, the labour market integration of refugee women has been less successful in the past than that of refugee men. For a wide variety of reas...

Schwartz developed his Theory of Basic Human Values and corresponding instruments, the portrait values questionnaire (PVQ) and the Schwartz values survey (SVS), in order to measure personal values. He uses these instruments (in a slightly modified form) in conjunction with his Theory of Cultural Value Orientations to measure cultural or societal va...

We address two research questions: 1) In what sense are motivation and satisficing strategies influencing substantial results of social-media surveys? 2) In what way do substantial research results differ due to various approaches for accessing the field?

The survey research community currently has reservations about online data collection. Still, online surveys and especially social media-based survey research are increasingly becoming a central part of market research as well as of some pockets of social science research (see Keusch, 2015), particularly for researchers who are thematically rooted...

Schwartz in his famous theory of basic values follows Parsons and Rokeach in arguing that human values are trans-situational or context free. For any individual, the same personal value priorities exist across different life contexts such as the workplace, the school or the home. This assumption influenced the design of Schwartz’s Portrait Values Q...

Purpose A growing amount of German and Austrian utilities create own Facebook accounts to communicate with their stakeholders. Whereas existing studies describe how utility companies are currently using Facebook, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, there exists no study which focuses on the actual expectations of Facebook users. Nevertheless, a...

A renaissance of the scientific study of participation has fortunately taken place in recent years. As a consequence of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, forms of participation of children were implemented in different fields of society, especially in the community and at the school level. These programs and attempts are described by scien...

In Schwartz’s 21-item portrait values questionnaire (PVQ) each item consists of two statements which refer to a single underling value. In each of the 21 items the respondents are asked to give a single response to the two statements. Anecdotal evidence and cognitive response theory alert us to potential measurement error in this two-statements-sin...

Eine viel zitierte sozialwissenschaftliche Definition der Evaluationsforschung von Rossi und Freeman (1993, S. 5) lautet „Evaluation research is the systematic application of social research procedures for assessing the conceptualization, design, implementation, and utility of social intervention programs“.

Recently, European school systems have seen various attempts to ‘modernise’ their governance. Market and competition oriented reforms have not been central to governance innovation strategies in German speaking countries, however, their number and relevance is rising in recent years. A free school choice policy which abolishes ‘‘school districts’’...

The number of projects that collect non-probability convenience samples provided by a self-selection of social media users is growing. Since self-selection of social media users influences substantial results, the question arises: How can a self-selection bias be accounted for? Consequently, we focus on the consequences for substantive results and options to account for them.
Project
This project engages with Schwartz’s Theory of Values and tests particular assumptions that inform his measurement of values. In our assessment, Schwartz's theory and data collection instruments are at the forefront of research on values across the globe. For this reason, we not only use his work but engage critically with it. We are currently conducting two new studies: one tests the universality of Schwartz’s Theory of Values and the other measures the influence of universities on students’ value priorities. In 2018 and 2019 we collected survey data in Nigeria, Austria, South Africa and Germany.
