Background: Urban gardening enhances public health in urban environments by creating green spaces that encourage physical activity, provide access to fresh food, and support mental well-being. These initiatives also strengthen social connections, alleviate stress, and contribute to environmental sustainability, thus addressing health disparities an...
Environmental policy stringency, eco-innovation, and green finance play key roles in advancing sustainability, particularly in low- and middle-income countries such as Pakistan. Using annual data from 1990 to 2020, this study employs a quantile autoregressive distributed lag (QARDL) approach to explore the effects across different quantiles. The re...
Background: Climate change poses significant challenges to global health, At the same time, the healthcare sector itself, with its high resource demands, also contributes substantially to global warming. Anesthesia, particularly through the use of volatile inhalation anesthetics, is a key contributor in this respect. The present exploratory study e...
Telehealth is a valuable tool for reminding transgender-persons to undergo HIV testing, hormone injections, and voice training. Despite increased awareness of the unique health needs of transgender-individuals in recent years, effectively addressing their concerns remains challenging. The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected socioeconomic stat...
The incidence of allergic respiratory diseases has increased in recent decades, with declining biodiversity identified as a potential contributing factor. While directly linking this increase to biodiversity loss is challenging, the research on pollen offers crucial insights into how environmental changes impact patients with pollen allergies. This...
The rollout of electric vehicles and photovoltaic panels is essential to mitigate climate change. However, they depend on technology‐critical elements (TCEs), which can be harmful to human health and whose use is rapidly expanding, while recycling is lacking. While mining has received substantial attention, in‐use dissipation in urban areas has so...
Urban horticulture poses a sustainable form of food production, fosters community engagement and mitigates the impacts of climate change on cities. Yet, it can also be tied to health challenges related to soil contamination. This work builds on a previous study conducted on eleven urban gardens in the city of Vienna, Austria. Following the findings...
Forest risks and benefits to human health are widely recognised. Yet, variation across forest types and their ecological characteristics driving health effects remain underexplored. Based on empirical data from an interdisciplinary European forest network, we developed a Bayesian Belief Network to quantify seven causal pathways relating different f...
Urban green contributes to enhanced well-being and overall quality of life in urban populations. The concept of place attachment provides an established avenue for exploring the intricate connections between urban environments and personal experiences. Building on the notion of place attachment, we investigated the perceptions of horizontal and ver...
Forests foster buffered microclimates, but causal mechanisms have rarely been studied on longer timescales and in differently diverse stands. Here, we explore temperature regulation by a young experimental forest in Austria, focusing on four common colline broadleaf species (Acer platanoides L., Tilia cordata Mill., Quercus robur L., Carpinus betul...
Particulate matter (PM) exposure in urban areas is a continuous threat to human health and requires sustainable solutions for effective reduction. The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive overview of façade greening and its effects on PM and to identify knowledge gaps. Forests can foster mental health and well‐being. Yet, the contribution of forest biodiversity remains unclear, and experimental research is needed to unravel pathways of biodiversity–health linkages. Here, we assess the role of tree species richness, both actual and perceived, and how stress reduction and attention restoration can serve as potentia...
Recently, the One Health concept, which recognizes the interconnectedness of environmental, animal, and human health, has gained popularity. To collect data on environmental pollutants potentially harmful to human health over time, researchers often turn to natural organisms known as biomonitors. Honey bees, in particular, prove to be exceptionally...
The broad variety of measures that governments worldwide took against the COVID-19 pandemic led to restrictions in our everyday life, including the practice of sports such as rowing. This study aimed to examine changes in the daily life of rowers and their rowing engagement. We distributed an online questionnaire in German among rowers in 2021. In...

This study aimed to retrospectively assess how golfers perceived the impact of the crisis on physical act...
Abstract: Climate change causes global effects on multiple levels. The anthropogenic input of greenhouse gases increases the atmospheric mean temperature. It furthermore leads to a higher probability of extreme weather events (e.g., heat waves, floods) and thus strongly impacts the habitats of humans, animals, and plants. Against this background, r...
The amount of PM bound by tree canopies depends on leaf traits, but also the leaf area available, both of which are dependent on tree identity. We investigated four species (Acer platanoides L., Tilia cordata Mill., Quercus robur L., Carpinus betulus L.) grown in monocultures and in two and four species polycultures. The amount of PM on the leaves...
The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically impacted human lifestyles across the world. Lockdowns and home confinement decreased prior opportunities for everyday physical activity. To retrospectively assess how the Austrian population coped with these aspects of the crisis, we conducted a cross-sectional online survey from March to September 2021 using...
Developed in the pre-internet era in the early 1980s, empirical medical practice, i.e., evidence-based practice (EBP) has become crucial in critical thinking and statistical reasoning at the point-of-care. As little evidence is available so far on how EBP is perceived in the Austrian academic context, we conducted a cross-sectional online survey am...
At the time of the restrictions and lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, it became apparent how difficult it is for city dwellers to adhere to the prescribed behavioural measures and the protective distance in densely built urban areas. Inner-city parks and green spaces were heavily used for recreational purposes and were thus periodically overcr...
Ambient air pollutants are a global public health problem accounting for millions of annual deaths. A mobile module-based wind tunnel (WT) was developed to investigate the interaction between airborne particulate matter and various surface structures. The external dimensions were 4.33 m × 1.96 m × 1.73 m (lwh). The tunnel provided a cross-section o...
The project „Healthy people in a healthy climate” developed together with actors from science, civil society and state agencies in Styria consensual climate and public health goals and explored possi-ble policies. Consensual political goals bear the potential to induce new and solid political alliances in the sense of discourse coalitions between d...
In the light of climate change adaptation, urban green (and blue) infrastructures are becoming increasingly recognized, referring to urban and settlement planning and the design of climate-adapted housings and buildings.
Background
As part of the mobile revolution, smartphone-based applications (apps) have become almost indispensable in today’s information society. Consequently, the use of medical apps among healthcare professionals has increased heavily over the past years. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation has affected life at least since the first life forms moved out of the seas and crawled onto the land. Therefore, one might assume that evolution has adapted to natural UV radiation. However, evolution is mostly concerned with the propagation of the genetic code, not with a long, happy, and fulfilling life. Because ricket...
