Introduction
I am a senior researcher at the National Research Council (CONICET). Also, I am a member of Núcleo DiverSus, an interdisciplinary research network on diversity and sustainability at the Latin American scale. My research has an interdisciplinary focus (interface between rural sociology, ecology, agronomy and politics). My current work is on socio-ecological conflicts, land-use change, agribusiness expansion and rural technology.

Argentina is experiencing an expansion of soya and maize cultivation that is pushing the agricultural frontier over areas formerly occupied by native Chaco forest. Subsistance farmers use this dry forest to raise goats and cattle and to obtain a broad range of goods and services. Thus, two very different and non-compatible land uses are in dispute....
Framed by efficiency and productivity narratives, technological innovations are conceived as the inexorable pathway to agricultural development, obscuring the associated appropriation of ecological surpluses and depletion of natural resources. In the past two decades, increasing food, energy and animal feed global demands, have hasted capitalizatio...
Drawing upon a case study located in central Argentina, we analyse in what ways technology is contributing to the accumulation of capital in a context where prevailing strategies resting on farm‐scale extension are no longer effective. We identify two major technological phases that go along with changes in actors' strategies aiming at re‐establish...
Drawing upon the concept of ‘accumulation by dispossession’, this paper analyses the expansion of agrarian capital in Argentina. A case study illustrates the social and environmental impacts of the expansion of agribusiness in central Argentina and the social struggle – both rural and urban – that has arisen to resist this process. Although governm...
In a recent speech to the UN General Assembly, Argentine President Javier Milei rejected the Pact for the Future and the 2030 Agenda, a comprehensive global framework for sustainable development encompassing ‘people, planet, and prosperity.’ This position undermines Argentina’s capacity to tackle urgent socio-environmental challenges like poverty,...
On the basis of knowledge and values from different social actors, we investigated what biophysical properties of the wood are linked to good-quality firewood in the semiarid Chaco forest of central-western Argentina. We applied social actor-tailored semi-structured interviews to incorporate the perspectives of: a) two kinds of local social actors...

Because different perceptions of wildlife are usually involved in decision making processes on the use of environmental commons and in human choices, assigning an importance value to wildlife can be a relevant issue to discuss. We propose to broaden the concept of cultural value (CV) considering the trade-offs between the positive and negative Natu...
Deforestation and degradation processes have made the Espinal one of Argentina’s most threatened forested ecoregions. In the central-north part of Entre Ríos Province, forest remnants are important for biodiversity and cattle ranching integrated into the forest. Therefore, the conservation and sustainable use of the Entre Ríos Espinal requires the...
Plural valuation is about eliciting the diverse values of nature articulated by different stakeholders in order to inform decision making and thus achieve more equitable and sustainable outcomes. We explore what approaches align with plural valuation on the ground, as well as how different social-ecological contexts play a role in translating plura...

This article aims to contribute to the understanding of land-grabbing
processes. Drawing upon an analysis carried out in Northern Córdoba
(Argentina), it suggests that this phenomenon: (a) is not lineal, or uniform, nor
does it increase steadily over time; and (b) it is not limited to land
concentration, but integrates strategic resources (financia...
Land use changes in the South American Gran Chaco affect native fauna and the ecosystem services (ES) they provide. The consequences of defaunation and the empty forest syndrome have been identified in tropical and subtropical forests, including the Gran Chaco. Local knowledge regarding native species and the provision of ES can be integrated with...
Nature is perceived and valued in starkly different and often conflicting ways. This paper presents the rationale for the inclusive valuation of nature’s contributions to people (NCP) in decision making, as well as broad methodological steps for doing so. While developed within the context of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosy...
Drawing upon the four categories that regulate property, access and appropriation of economic goods (i.e., private, public, open access, and common), this paper aims to analyze how the approval of a law that fosters the conservation of native forests a) promotes the enclosure of common goods, and b) causes different impacts among social actors. By...

Why does co-produced, policy-relevant, adequately communicated science fail to influence policy implementation? Analysts of the science–policy interface often focus on the societal relevance of the research questions and on the strategies to convey findings to the political sphere. We argue that these conditions are necessary but not sufficient. We...

Synergistic combinations of climatic and land use changes have the potential to produce the most dramatic impacts on land cover. Although this is widely accepted, empirical examples, particularly involving deforestation in Latin America, are still very few. The geographic extent and causes of deforestation in subtropical seasonally dry forests of t...

Drawing upon a case study from Argentina, this paper focuses on social actors who cannot be formally included within the organic movement: non-certified organic farmers. Even when they grow, consume and sell organic products, they are unable to become certified organic farmers, mainly for economic reasons. This paper analyses the main features of t...
Conservation initiatives are failing to arrest the global loss of biodiversity. From our mechanistic studies of ecology and economics, we suggest that for grazing lands the root cause of this failure is a powerful economic deterrent to measures designed to protect diversity. We identify an exponential relationship between monetary returns and inten...
