This paper explores the variety of socio-material arrangements that enable older people to continue living independently. Drawing on a collection of ethnographic observations and interviews with telecare users I conducted at their homes in 2004 and 2008, I will analyse in detail how the process of adopting the service makes visible and puts to the...

Telecare technologies have become one of the most widespread services devised as a solution to the increasing needs of long-term care, as well as a tool for the promotion of older people’s independent living. Besides other institutional factors, their current market success might very well stem from the fact of having placed at the very core of the...

In what way is »care« a matter of »tinkering«? Rather than presenting care as a (preferably »warm«) relation between human beings, the various contributions to the volume give the material world (usually cast as »cold«) a prominent place in their analysis. Thus, this book does not continue to oppose care and technology, but contributes to rethinkin...

Home has become a newly fostered place for care giving in what might be called an aging in place paradigm. As a result, thinking about how the homes spatialities are configured and how they might transform caring has become an important issue for the social sciences. This article is a contribution to this line of thought and looks at being-at-home...
