We report on curation and digitization experiences of a large collection of Bryozoa (>19,759 of estimated 38,000 lots digitized, >1,000 type lots). Storage of one to two histology slides in capped glass vials and larger series in twenty-five-slot histology boxes is optimal. Bulk dry material is stored in acid-free containers (cardboard, plastic). F...

Three new records of Bathysciadium pacificum Dall, 1908 from off Oregon and Washington extend the range of the species from Peru by ~7,300 km to the temperate northeastern Pacific. The rivers of southeastern Australia host a species complex within the carp gudgeon genus Hypseleotris that includes parental species and hemiclonal hybrid lineages. These hemiclones can be difficult to distinguish from their parent taxa, making delineation of species unusually difficult. We approach this historical taxonomic problem by using singl...

The reasons for excess names in microfloral orchids such as Oberonia Lindl. can be traced to poor scholarship (e.g., failure to review the literature, ignoring expert advice), typological thinking, and erroneous assumption of microendemism. Some extraordinarily poor descriptions, including some from the 21st century, can be termed “taxonomic vandal...

These anchoring rootlets may be resorbed or additional ones may be formed. Terminal anchoring...

Question
In botanical nomenclature, is there a term for recognizing that a previously considered correct name is in fact a nom. illeg./superfl./inq./dubium ?
Stat. nov. only applies to changes in rank according to ICN, although the term would describe the change in status from correct to in-correct name very well. Such changes are nomenclatural novelties; it would be good to flag them.
Thanks for your wisdom!
Question
Re typification of a plant genus if only a single species is/was contained in that genus (ICN Art. 40.3): Is that mode of designation "by original designation" or "by monotypy"? I am not sure whether the concept of typification by monotypy exists in botany (glossary has zero hits on "monotypy").
Even if typification by monotypy is not explicitly stated in ICN/Thurland, is it used in systematic botany? Or is this another distinction between ICN-Botany and ICZN-Zoology?
Please note, that the question is not the description of a genus with a single species (monotypic genus), but the mode of typification.
Thanks!
Question
I have a bunch of Scyphozoa and other jellyfish that are have been in 5-10% formalin for at least a decade. Is it safe to transfer those to 70% ethanol? Any downsides?
I do know that jellies need to be strongly fixed in formalin (or some other aldehyde), but once they are fixed, can they be transferred to the less toxic ethanol?
