Our research sits at the intersection of communication studies, sociology, cyberculture, and political philosophy and theory. In 2014, a 10+-min segment on polyamory aired on Portuguese open-access national television, during the prime-time newscast, and was viewed by several million people, according to official reports. The news piece was also ad...
OnlyFans has enjoyed increasing attention from media and from users and consumers,
especially since the start of the covid-19 pandemic, and particularly amongst internet-
savy emerging adults. We used semi-structured interviews to collect testimonies from
young Italian women (N=20) who sell their own sexual(ised) content on OnlyFans and

Recently, we have seen relatively unknown platforms, like OnlyFans, rise to popularity among producers and consumers of sexual(ised) digital content. This seems to be especially so in the case of young adults who were affected by a sudden disappearance of entry-level jobs in hospitality, retail and associated functions, or diminished university exp...
This chapter looks at the potential romantic relationship challenges posed to kink-identified people and how they connect with identity development and individual well-being. By thematically analyzing the survey responses of 87 kinky Portuguese respondents, the researchers identified challenges across three interconnected main themes: (1) intrapers...
In this essay, I focus on the politics and impacts of naming, especially in the social and human sciences, and more specifically on studies that focus on subordinated or discriminated groups. Through this essay, I argue that naming conventions are some of the most important-and dangerous-tools and acts that researchers have at their disposal and, t...

BDSM constitutes a stigmatized form of sexuality in which sexual fluidity may arise. Noting the scarcity of research on these themes in Portugal, we sought to explore and understand sexual fluidity in people who identified themselves as BDSM practitioners, both in the context of so-called ‘vanilla’ sex and BDSM practice. Using a qualitative methodo...

Introduction
The term “paedophilia erotica” was first coined in 1886 by the psychiatrist Krafft-Ebing and it was considered a “psycho-sexual perversion”. It was at the beginning of the twentieth century that the term “pedophilia” was adopted and it started to appear in medical dictionaries. Sexual abuse is legally defined as the engagement in sexua...

With this commentary, I wish to address a 2-fold issue around the topic of autoerotic asphyxiation (AeA): (i) that the historical trend towards the pathologization of kink and other forms of sexuality considered ‘Other’ is particularly salient in the case of AeA and is potentially harmful for AeA practitioners; (ii) that the medicali...
The framework of Human Rights and intimate citizenship (PLUMMER, 1995) is frequently deployed to theoretically explore polyamory (CARDOSO, 2017) and other alternatives to mononormavitivy (PIEPER; BAUER, 2005). Activism around this topic tends to track the political agenda and planning laid down by the LGBTQ+ community, and some of its most visible...

The article “Defining Polyamory: A Thematic Analysis of Lay People’s Definitions”, written by Daniel Cardoso, Patricia M. Pascoal, and Francisco Hertel Maiochi, was originally published electronically on the publisher’s internet portal on 27 May 2021 without open access.
This commentary focuses on the cinematic and intellectual work of Miguel De, expressed through The Kiss and its accompanying essay. The objective here is to problematize some of the historical and technocultural connections raised by the essay, and to frame De's experimental essay film within a wider tradition of (mostly European) film-making who h...

Short report on media coverage about consensual non-monogamies in print newspapers and magazines in Portugal between 2010-2020
As a media category whose social and cultural role is heavily contested, pornography is often framed as a threat to sexual mores, to cultural propriety, and gender equality, and the savior of the same elements. In both perspectives, pornography is seen as educational—both in the emancipatory and in the regressive sense of the word. The way pornogra...
This entry is about the relation between gender studies and women's lifestyle magazines studies, a relevant part of communication studies. It discusses how magazines function as marketing tools that also mirror and normalize gender and ethnic concerns, and work as social memory constructors in implicitly political ways. Magazines base their content...

There is a considerable gap on how social movements that center around non/monogamies decide to organize and articulate their strategies, as well as how they manage their tensions with other activist groups and ideologies or even the State. In addition to this, the fact that much of the literature that circulates is written in English and in an Ang...

Review Margret Grebowicz, Why internet porn matters, Stanford, California: Stanford University Press, 2013. ISBN: 0-8047-8662-3, pp.135. Margret Grebowicz urges readers to look at Internet pornography through what she calls a 'philosophical register' (p. 2), which she identifies as a 'methodological decision' (p. 3). For Grebowicz, this is done by...
In this paper, I seek to contextualize the fight for the (already accomplished) legal recognition of same-sex marriage in Portugal within the wider frame of LGBT activism in this country (Cascais, 2006), and in the interplay of several differently positioned activists. Within this frame, I will analyze how the theoretical work of Miguel Vale de Alm...

Stemming from the auto-ethnographic telling of a round-table organized by a lesbian-focused activist group in Lisbon, Portugal, the authors reflect on the intersections between doing research, spreading that research, doing activism and working with / listening to sexual minorities as a way of critically involving the LGBT community and their conce...
In times of changing sexualities and identity politics, some people are changing the way they define relationships, from sex-related words, and to feelings-related words. Polyamory, meaning literally “loving many”, is one such case. Polyamory makes sex a peripheral subject in defining a relationship, but the original referential is still there: mon...

A televisão no quarto, o rádi...

This Thesis aims to determine if the users of the alt.polyamory mailing list, by telling their personal experiences in writing, are actually performing in a queer way, questioning mono-normativity and a heterocentric view on society, by being self-reflexive and caring for their self (gnothi seauton) through writing (as ethopoiesis) and reading of t...

I'm trying to think through the impact and role of interpersonal relationships and affects as structural places of analysis to understand how small scale grass-roots activism takes place, organizes itself and changes.
Are there any readings that you would recommend, or consider a good introduction to the topic?
Do you plan to use tools like Asana or Bitrix24 and adapt them to collaborative research work? Do you already do this? What are your experiences and favorite platforms?
I grow increasingly tired of e-mail + Mailing List + Google Drive + Dropbox + Trello for each one thing I'm working on.
